Andrew Shaw Ejected For Head Butting (Video)

After being on the receiving end of a series of cross-checks from Brock Nelson, Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw headbutted the Islanders’ forward at 5:30 into the second period. He was given a five minute major penalty and a game misconduct, and will likely receive some supplemental discipline from the league.

The Blackhawks were leading 2-0 when Shaw took the stupid penalty. Thankfully, his teammates did a masterful job killing the penalty, allowing only one shot on net during the five minute advantage.

  1. Our ShinPads has done very little this year. I think with this WWE-type act tonight Q needs to introduce him to the press box just for the hell of it. Time to send a strong message. This move tonight could have been disastrous if not for a penalty kill of the ages against a top tier offensive team. His propensity for dumb-ass play has run its course; personally, I’ve seen enough of him.
This kid had better get something to show for himself in the final 13 tilts & playoffs or he most definitely will be donning another sweater next year…he’s easily replaceable and wouldn’t be missed.
    Go Hawks!

  2. Hate to see stuff like this, no place in hockey for this. Any discipline, which I’m sure will be significant, is earned.

  3. Amy cross check penalty on Nelson, no I didn’t think so. You can see he hacks Shaw on the wrist. Doesn’t excuse what Shaw did and he’ll get suspended.

Nelson’s cross checks are strangely reminiscent of Carcillo’s on Perreault of the Jets. Oh well, it’s certainly nothing I don’t expect after watching NHL officiating for decades. But Shaw’s action was stupid, no question.

  4. I’m a Shaw fan, but he is prone to serious brain cramps like that dumb ass play last night that could have given the Isles some huge momentum and potentially cost the Hawks a most valuable 2 pts. Management will likely give Shaw the ultimatum of shape up or you will be shipped out next year. Shaw is a guy that walks the edge with the way he plays. He has to, because of his size and skill set set. I still believe he brings more positive than negative, but the head butt last night was embarrassingly stupid. Shit like that needs to stop.

    Lets Go Hawks!

  5. I agree….dumb ass penalty. No suspension but I would have supported 1-3 games. That said, those who don’t want Shaw back next year are wrong. If Q wants to bench him a few games, OK send that message.

Hawks need Shaw. His net front presence alone is worth the risk of a bad penalty now and then. He gets into the hard areas and takes a pounding. He is a quintessential role player on the Hawks along with Kruger. All teams need em, Hawks included

  6. BTW another misleading NHL stat. Hawks were short 7 full minutes last night but were only credited with 2 PKs. PK%, PP% and secondary assist are the most convoluted stats in hockey.
