Blackhawks Acquire Rights to D Steve Montador

The Blackhawks have acquired the negotiating rights to free agent-to-be defenseman Steve Montador from the Buffalo Sabres. They now have until noon ET on Friday to get a deal done.

In exchange for the veteran, the Hawks would move the pick received from Florida in the trade sending Tomas Kopecky south (a 7th round pick).

So who is he?

Montador, 31, had five goals and 21 assists in 73 games last year with the Sabres, and was +16 on the season. He also registered 86 hits and a team-high 138 blocked shots while averaging 19:43 on ice per game. He averaged 2:04 on ice short-handed last year.

His cap number was $1.55M on a two-year deal previously.

Montador just signed 4 years for $11M ($2.75 a year). A little overpaid, but it should be worth it.
