Blackhawks Fail To Finish Game, First Half of Season

In a game that serves as a wonderful illustration of the entire Blackhawks season, they came out hot and failed to finish in a 4-2 loss.

Here are some harsh realities to consider as we head to the All Star Break:

  • The Hawks rank 26th in the NHL, winning just 61.9% of the time when leading after one period.
  • The Hawks rank 24th in the NHL, winning only 79.2% of the time when leading after two periods.
  • The Hawks rank 22nd in the NHL, winning only 62.1% of the time when scoring first in a game.
  • Through 50 games, the Hawks have allowed 39 goals in the first period.
  • Through 50 games, the Hawks have allowed 38 goals in the second period.
  • Through 50 games, the Hawks have allowed 58 goals in the third period.
  • Through 50 games, the Hawks have scored 53 goals in the first period.
  • Through 50 games, the Hawks have scored 52 goals in the second period.
  • Through 50 games, the Hawks have scored 47 goals in the third period.

None of these trends are very good, and speak to the inconsistency we’ve seen from the Blackhawks this year. However, there are other realities in play right now.

  • The Blackhawks sit in 8th in the Western Conference.
  • The Blackhawks scoring differential (+18) is tied for 3rd (LA) in the Western Conference.
  • The Blackhawks won six of their last 10 games before the Break; only Phoenix, Anaheim and Nashville won more.
  • The Blackhawks 53 goals in the first period this year is the most in the NHL.

Yes, these Blackhawks are frustrating. But the conference is so wide open, there is plenty of reason to hope.
