Blackhawks lose another member of 1961 team

Ab McDonald, who was a member of the Hawks’ 1961 championship team, has reportedly passed away. He was 82.

The Blackhawks acquired McDonald in a trade that also brought Reg Fleming, Bob Courcy and Cecil Hoekstra to Chicago from Montreal on June 7, 1960. He scored 73 goals over the four seasons that followed before the Hawks traded him to Boston – again, with Reg Fleming – on June 8, 1964.

  1. Didn’t get a chance to see him play much, but a solid journeyman contributor, for a lot of years. The 61 cup was his 3rd or 4th in a row coming from Habs winning every year he was with them too.

  2. I never saw the original Scooter line with him, Mikita, and Kenny Wharram, but I vaguely recall him being on the expansion Pens. Doesn’t matter, he wore the Indian Head – that’s what counts. RIP.

  3. The Scooters were a great line in the 60’s!!!! Unfortunately now they are all gone. I saw them play at the old stadium and on channel 9 scores of times back then. Best regards to the family.
