Blackhawks Recall Spencer Abbott

On Tuesday afternoon, the Blackhawks recalled forward Spencer Abbott from Rockford. This move comes after the Hawks sent struggling forward Tyler Motte to the IceHogs.

Abbott, 28, is tied for the Rockford team lead with 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 30 games this season.

Listed at 5-9 and 170 pounds, he was acquired from Toronto in a trade for defenseman TJ Brennan on Feb. 26, 2015 and was with the IceHogs for the duration of the 2014-15 season. The Blackhawks re-signed Abbott this past summer.

Abbott played for Frolunda in the SHL last season, posting 35 points in 42 games. He was a teammate of current IceHogs netminder Lars Johansson and Blackhawks prospect John Dahlstrom with Frolunda.

He has appeared in one NHL game, on Oct. 5, 2013 with Toronto. Abbott originally signed with the Toronto Marlies after four seasons at the University of Maine.

  1. Cap savings of 4,268 per game. 22 games until the trading deadline. Savings of 94k. Motte has not been the same since the injury. Whenever Kruger returns another move will have to happen, so that would save more space. Sooner he returns the better in terms of dollars saved. I’d keep Kero over Tootoo when that time comes. If Kruger comes back tomorrow (not happening, hypothetical) and Tootoo is waived it saves 384k.

  2. Its all good rookies everybody said needed ahl time getting some, showcasing potential trade options for help that everyone wants for strech run and helping with the cap room while doing it. Right time for it

  3. Tab- great photo and write up on your previous Blog – Re: From and Carlsson

From- had a great tourney , showed great speed, despite playing with an injured ankle!

  4. That’s the bueaty of the Bowman and crew. Very good scouts and relentlessness keeps us finding good players. Think that’s why we have an endless supply of good young players coming each time people think we donot have anything left in farm, bang her comes another wave. The Calvary is coming again.

  5. Davehawks-McNeil would have to go through waivers to go back to Rockford. If/when he would get sent back down, he would be exposed. I wonder if he will stay next year or if he will get resigned. Seems to me that he is not in their future plans.

  6. McNeil went through waivers once, as did Abbott. He’s exempt until he plays a certain number of games or is on the roster for a certain amount of days.

  7. The Hawks have always seemed to like left winger Matt Nieto from San Jose who is now on waivers. I wonder if Stan takes a flyer on him.

  8. Ernie, thanks for detailed info on things.

Phil/JS, appreciate your (positive and truthful) posts of wisdom.

  9. So we may have the “HAT” line (Hossa/Abbott/Toews) at least until Q’s blender gets going. Any word on what the other lines look like now?

I noted that 1 player came up (Abbott), one went down (Motte) and 1 came off IR (Hossa)…so does another have to go down or were we operating with 22 players for a while?

  10. Kruger still on ir. Max roster is 23. Once Kruger comes back another move will be needed. Hopefully Tootoo…Probably Kero.
