Blackhawks Roster Updates

Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa returned to practice on Thursday, but both have already been ruled out for Friday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. The team is (rightfully) being cautious with the two stars; Sharp is hoping to return next week.

Ray Emery will start in net for the Hawks against the Ducks.

Thanks Tab……I am way OK with letting them both get near 100%. Hawks have a decent cushion so why risk reinjury. May not be what the fans want but Hayes and Bolig will get needed NHL time. You never know, might need them at crunch time.

  2. Mike says:

Look out tomorrow night. Ducks have lost 4 straight since beating us. They will have some desperation in their game.

  3. BigSmokeJ says:

At this point especially with Hossa, I wouldn’t bring either him or Sharp back until 4/14 against the Blues. That gives them 8 games to get in game shape before the playoffs. There’s no reason to bring them back before. They can’t afford to have either go down in the playoffs.

My gut tells me this is the team Stan is going to the playoffs with. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think so.
Hopefully it’s enough to get them to another Cup finals.

And Friday is going to be a real test for the Hawks because the Ducks have been reeling since they beat them in Ana. And don’t look now but Minn and Van are only 6 back and Minn has a game in hand.

    Go Hawks

  4. James M says:

Since Hayes played center in Rockford, is it possible he slides there when Sharp returns? Does he get sent down?

  5. BigSmokeJ says:

Meant Minn and Van are 6 behind Ana in my last post.

  6. Tab Bamford says:

The 23-man roster limit only matters until the trade deadline; then teams can carry as many as they can afford. So if Hossa & Sharp come back after the weekend, they technically don’t have to send Hayes down (if they’re still at the roster max). Here’s the roster rules from

With that being said, the Hawks might have space on their roster if they move a roster player (or two) in a trade before the deadline.

  7. RyanDale says:

didn’t see the Emery start coming…disappointed the 2 stars won’t be playing only because
its the only home game i attend all year…but if it helps in the long run, ya cant rush it

  8. AdamRrr says:

Rumor that Toews and Kane also will not dress vs Anaheim

  9. Charles B says:

    AdamRrr: Youve completely gone crazzZZyyYYy!

  10. AdamRrr says:

Just what I’ve heard… makes cents anyways right?

  11. Tab Bamford says:

Cents as in pennies, nickles and dimes? Or sense as in “no, this doesn’t make any sense whatsoever?”

  12. AdamRrr says:

Sentse. Give kaner the night off. He was out with Lebron last night

  13. Pete says:

I would like to see the Hawks add one more quality player to their 4 lines for a Stanley Cup run. I know everyone is saying it has to be a center. My feeling is just get one more player and if its a center great, if not, it will still help. I wouldn’t give up more than the 2013 1st round pick and a mid-level prospect. I would not give up a top prospect. I think the Hawks can win it all with the team they have, but if they can improve their chances without gutting the future then they should do it.

  14. 'hawks58 says:

Ugh, Q please don’t start doing this to Crawford again. He’s the freaking starter and it isn’t the back end of a back-to-back, START HIM DAMNIT!

  15. Al B says:

Tab: Can you give us a few names (maybe Top 5) of centers who could improve the Hawks’ face-off totals, and might be obtainable? Does it seem like Bowman is looking at Veteran rentals to add to the mix – almost exclusively. Is that because they’re more accessible or that he doesn’t want to disturb the chemistry by moving (one/two) players to secure an upgrade? Finally, would someone like Boyd Gordon or David Legwand be on that list?

  16. Tim G says:

Hawks58- We do have a back to back on sunday and monday. If he wants to give him the Sunday part of that, I can see where he would give tonights game to Emery.

Atleast that’s the logic im seeing my head. Emery tonight… Craw vs Det. Emery vs Nash. Crawford vs STL and Nashville next thursday and saturday, Emery vs Nashville next sunday. Then we have 4 games the following week… ending in a back to back where they would split again.

Just keeping both fresh I would imagine.

  17. Tab Bamford says:

    re: the selection of netminders

Look at the schedule. The Blackhawks still have, including this weekend, FIVE back-to-back scenarios, and only one of them is without travel between games. Keep the netminders sharp and fresh; this is going to be a tricky month to navigate because of the schedule.
