Blackhawks Send Ben Smith to Rockford

On Monday morning, the Blackhawks sent forward Ben Smith to Rockford.

Smith has been out because of a concussion he suffered as result of a cheap shot during a preseason game against Detroit. He has now been medically cleared to skate, but will begin his 2011-12 season in Rockford.

Whether or not the Hawks just want him to get some game action in Rockford to have his legs back under him is up for debate, but the fact that Rostislav Olesz and John Scott are in Chicago and Smith isn’t is a crime.

  1. I have no problem with Olesz being a part of the 23 man roster. I didn’t understand why he wasn’t bought out… but now that he’s here he is at least a warm body, with some upside. HOPEFULLY he is learning Q’s system in case we need him. Expensive depth, but depth nonetheless.

How about the boys down below? Morin is back – 2 goals in 2 games. Beach also doing quite well.

  2. Olesz apparently wasn’t bought out because he wasn’t medically cleared yet… my issue w/ Olesz & Scott is that there could be someone in Rockford that earns a chance to skate w/ the big kids this year, but as long as there are 23 guys on the NHL roster they’ll have to wait for an injury or trade. If you’re going to sit 60 times, get outta town.

  3. I hear that… I suppose I’m a bit of an optomist. I’m holding out hope that he can be a top six winger on this team.

What do you think of loading up Kane’s line – making it a de facto first line
    Sharp – Kane – Hossa
Stalberg – Toews – (Olesz, Smith, Morin…… brunette)

Do you think we are in for plenty of different looks with this line up for the first half of the year?

  4. We gotta get Johny’s line going. I am still excited about the Brunette signing because with his hands around the net, he is deadly. He has already showed that on the pp. But you can’t have a pp specalist on the 1st line if it isn’t working. Still early but Johny has been pretty invisible so far. Invisible is a relative term, 19 has still produced, but it is obvious our top line is still being ironed out.

Kane might be the best player in the NHL right now and he could point with me on his wing. Espically with Hossa, the other wing on that line dosen’t seem as it matters as much.

I was kinda looking forward to seeing Smith on the 1st line if Brun/Towes/Sharp still isn’t producing.

But it’s early, we’ll get there. We have the pieces.

With the grit we added this year, it completely baffles my mind that Scott is still on this team. Can someone please explain that one to me? Seriously……

  5. I just don’t see what the Hawks & Coach Q see in Scott? It makes no sense to me. I can understand having Scott last year when we needed toughness at any cost just to have ANYBODY to protect Toews and Kaner, but what is the purpose now?

Isn’t that why Hawks FO addressed that in the offseason, so that we didn’t need to keep someone as useless as Scott on the roster this year? We now have veterans, and tough guys, i.e Car bomb, Mayer etc. Get rid of Scott.
