Thanks for the compliments, Mr. Hogan. I appreciate it!

I agree with you that Barker was a high draft pick and that d-men take a bit longer to develop.

But the great thing about the Hawks system as a whole is that they're stocked with some good, young talent that might be ready to come along.

The bad part of the Hawks organization is that the NHL roster has some albatross" contracts that are now putting strain on the overall team.

So there needs to be a medium. Good luck, Stan Bowman!

Because of the presence of a couple young kids that were also fairly high draft picks, Dylan Olsen and Shawn LaLonde, someone like Barker might be worth taking a risk that's peaked.

When you have as much talent as the Hawks do, there are going to be players (Craig Anderson) that go somewhere else and succeed more than you thought they could (Tuomo Ruutu). But if the goal is winning the Cup, the key is to maintain focus on putting together a team that works well on the ice that fits under the cap.

If Barker, or Byfuglien or Ladd, becomes a piece that's necessarily moved to make room under the cap because a young guy like Olsen, LaLonde or even Beach and Aliu come up and adequately fill that role for cheap, it's gotta happen.

The point of this piece is that Campbell does have albatross contract that, if it isn't traded, could benefit the team in the immediate future by being minimized via a buy out.

Thanks for the comments, Daniel!

Afterthought:

If the 'Hawks weren't able to resign Keith, I was all set to start referring to Campbell as "The Albatross" every time he touched the puck. LOL!

First of all, I have to compliment you on this site. A friend of mine recently found it and sent me the link. You clearly know the team extremely well, and from what I have read, I tend to agree with all your posts.

I absolutely agree with your assessment of Hjalmarsson. As a matter of fact, as I was reading the sentence with the list of upcoming restricted free agents, I had the same exact thought.

Just throwing my two cents in regarding Cam Barker:

Big guys take a while to develop. Heck, defensemen in general take a while to develop. I'm curious to see how he comes along over the next few seasons. After all, he is only 23. He was drafted third overall (behind Ovechkin and Malkin). I know that comes with a grain of salt; lots of high picks have been busts. Still, I'd hate to see him go somewhere else and develop into a solid top pair blue liner, and have it come back to bite the ‘Hawks.

Just a thought.

Keep up the good work!
