The Blackhawks confirmed that center and captain Jonathan Toews will miss two weeks with an upper-body (shoulder) injury.
This injury couldn’t come at a worse time for the Blackhawks. Not only is Detroit without two of their key players, but the Hawks have seven games in the first 15 days of January. In the final 15 days of January, the Hawks have just four.
Now the wheels will be set in motion. The Blackhawks have options at center, having recently signed Ryan Johnson. Where this injury impacts the Blackhawks the most is in the faceoff circle, where every center on the roster this year has struggled to win draws. While the Hawks have preferred to keep Patrick Sharp at wing recently, he’s winning over 50 percent of his chances at the dot and may be forced back to center while Toews is missing.
