On Wednesday, the Chicago chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association nominated goaltender Scott Darling for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
Each year, the Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. Bryan Berard was the last – and only the second – Blackhawks player to win the award, winning after the 2003-04 season. Before Berard, the only other Hawks player to win the award was Pit Martin after the 1969-70 campaign.
Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote a masterful piece on Darling’s journey to the Blackhawks roster back in December. Read it.
Some thought defenseman Kimmo Timonen may have received the Chicago nomination, but Darling is certainly worthy. Here’s hoping he wins it!
