St. Louis Blues Fire Coach Andy Murray

On Saturday morning, the St. Louis Blues wished Andy Murray a Happy New Year with a pink slip in an effort to get their struggling team to play better hockey. They have named Davis Payne the interim coach.

The Blues are 17-17-6 currently, and sit in fourth place in the Central Division. They host the Blackhawks tonight and will be without left wing Paul Karya, who was placed on injured reserved on Dec. 30 with an upper body injury. The Blues offense has been miserable all season, as they have only two players with more than nine goals and are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for 24th in the NHL scoring only 2.53 goals per game. When you’re allowing 2.80 goals per game, you’re not going to win many games.

The Blues come into Saturday night’s game having lost their last four games of 2009, but they scored three goals in each of the losses. Chris Mason hasn’t been as good as St. Louis hoped this year, and free agent addition Ty Conklin hasn’t made the transition to being a number one goalie yet.

Murray is the second head coach fired during this season; Philadelphia fired John Stevens and has seen improved play of late.
