In his online column for the New York Post yesterday, Larry Brooks decided to join the list of idiot national writers that are taking their shots at the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
From Brooks to Sports Illustrated’s embarrassing Adrian Dater, everyone likes to look back and blast Stan Bowman for allegedly mismanaging the salary cap and being too reactionary in his moves last summer. Yet nobody wants to do two second of homework to avoid looking like an epic douchebag.
What am I talking about? Here’s what Brooks had to say about the Blackhawks on Sunday:
It’s not the hard cap that’s doing in the Blackhawks as much as the bizarre offseason decisions the front office made in coping with the situation.
When GM Stan Bowman, the fellow believed responsible for the previous summer’s offer sheet fiasco that was a significant factor in the post-Cup mess, decided not to sign Antti Niemi but to match on the offer sheet to Niklas Hjalmarsson, sign Marty Turco and then deal Andrew Ladd, well, citing the cap is nothing more than a convenient excuse.
Geez, Bowman really is an idiot to match the offer sheet and then trade… oh, wait…
Looking back at REALITY seems to indicate that Andrew Ladd was traded on July 1, but Niklas Hjalmarsson didn’t sign the offer sheet with San Jose until July 9. Indeed, Marty Turco didn’t sign with the Hawks until August 2.
Larry Brooks is a disaster, which is why Jeremy Roenick blasted him on national television earlier in the playoffs. The Post should be ashamed to be writing him a paycheck.
