For those out there that know this stuff, is somebody good dropping unexpectedly?

Thru 23 picks, Hunter Shinkaruk is really the only guy I would consider “sliding,” and he was rated between 14-23 by the various outlets.

And Shinkaruk came off the board at 24 to Vancouver, so…

So Tab, do you have a “favorite” for the hawks to pick at this point?

Pete there are 2 QMJHL players that are great value for the Hawks if they fall to 30, plus I like both of them…Valentin Zykov from Baie Comeau and Adam Erne from the Ramparts in Quebec City. Erne is 6’0″ 210 and places predominately LW…he scored 28 goals and had 72 points in 68 games this past season and was a +11. He’s an attractive player because he has a high compete level, is smart, and does EVERYTHING well. Plus, he is a good skater, and with his solid frame, he’ll be a force at both ends of the ice…he’s noted as a 2 way player. Zykov is the exact same size as Erne, has great hands, scores lots of goals (40 this past year) and was a +29…he too is a LW and is very strong along the boards…I like this kid a lot.

What do you guys think of the pick?

I was hoping for Klimchuk. Hartman will be under the scope being from Chicago. He’s got a bum shoulder right now. I was surprised SB took him

Hartman is a great kid…don’t be mislead by his size (5’11” 190)…he is an Andrew Shaw type player with more skill…similar to Garret Ross as well…and the best thing about Hartman is that he wants to win…no, actually, he needs to win…very competitive kid…can play a finesse game with his skills, but loves to play the physical game…with throw off the gloves when necessary, and will often “cross the line” with some questionable hits to spark his team. He had 23 goals and 60 points in 56 games for Plymouth in the OHL and was a +29…that should tell you a ton…Like Dave Bolland, he also likes to agitate the “stars” on the opposing teams getting under their skin. He looks like a little shit, and plays like one.

Like Shaw, he’s the kind of player that you love if he’s on your team and HATE if he’s the opposition. He’s hard to play against. Plus he’s a very good skater…I think it’s a great pick because kids like this make it to the pros.

    Great job Stan!

Ryan, this is a great pick…he was +29 skating night after night checking the opposition’s best lines…if he played strictly for points or goals, this kid would have put up big numbers, but he’s not that kind of kid..he wants to win…offensively, he constantly ends up in front of the net creating havoc…getting under the goalie’s skin as well. Again, a great pick from a kid that can help us in 2 years…

Also keep in mind there is NO RUSH for this kid to hit the NHL roster. Take his time, grow into his body some more, and then he can matriculate his way to the NHL in a couple years. Solid pick for the final selection of the first round.

Is 5’11 190 really that small given his age? Also, Sr do you like the pick better than the two players you mentioned before?

  • June 30, 2013 at 10:00 pm

Yes, I do Pete, because we don’t need more scoring to win another Cup, we need more grit…I ddn’t mention Hartman because I didn’t think Bowman would add another Shaw/Ross type player…but again, if this year’s playoffs told us anything, we need more players like this…Shaw was too often alone in his role against the bruins…Ross and Hartman, fill out our roster in 2 years and make us VERY hard to play against.
