2014 NHL Awards: Messier Leadership Award Preview

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is nominated for two prestigious awards, and the NHL will name the winners in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.

Toews, LA’s Dustin Brown and Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf are this year’s finalists for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, which is awarded “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season.”

Very hard to say as I have no idea about Brown and Getzlaf’s leadership off the ice…Brown is a tireless worker for the less fortunate in LA year round. But if there was ever an award taylor made for a player, it was this award and Tazer…just the perfect leader and athlete. The best athlete in all of sports IMO and my favourite all time Hawk, and that’s saying a lot to “beat out” Tony O, Larmer, Mikita and Roenick.

Brown & Getzlaf have both done a great deal to be ambassadors for the game in southern California. Both great leaders.

That said, I think Messier picks Toews for the award bearing his name this year.
