Blackhawks Acquire G Henrik Karlsson From Flames

On Monday afternoon, the Blackhawks acquired goaltender Henrik Karlsson from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a 7th round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The 7th round pick was originally property of the Ottawa Senators.

Karlsson, 29, has played in 26 career NHL games. He had been designated for assignment by Calgary on Jan. 18, and was assigned to the Flames’ AHL affiliate earlier on Monday.

He has only this season left on his contract, which has a $862,500 cap number.

What do you think this means? Will Karlsson get a look in Chicago, or was he signed with the idea that maybe Hutton might get a shot if Crawford or Emery tank?
And any shot Carruth gets to Rockford this year? He’s been lights out in Portland.

Bowman and Q must be reading this site…

I asked for Rosey in place of Brookbank ( 2 assists)

I asked for ANY one but Emery! Within 24 hours we get Karlsson!!!

His #’s look decent in limited NHL time for Average Flames…
6′ 6″ tall, cuts down angles. He can’t be much worse than Emery was last nite…
I think Hawks Brass knows Emery is done… Last Tuesday in practice- I bet he let in 2 to 1 goals vs. Crow!!!!

Let’s slow our roll for a moment… Karlsson will go to Rockford to take care of the IceHogs while Hutton’s suspended. This is a decent – not great and/or special – depth add for the organization. Let’s not assume he replaces Emery (yet).

    What about Carruth?

WHL season goes through mid-March, and then Portland will be in the playoffs so that will extend Carruth’s time in the WHL. I would think that he would join Rockford after that, but depending on when Portland wraps up, there may only be 2-3 games left in Icehogs season if any at all. I fully expect Carruth to join them next year, though.

Why did they wait to give up a draft pick? Couldn’t they have picked him up off waivers instead a few days ago?

Cuz they saw how bad Hutton and Emery are!!!

Only other option will be to pick up experienced Goalie before deadline from non-playoff team.

As I’ve said a couple other places, the Hawks didn’t claim him off wiavers because Hutton wasn’t injured or going to be suspended until a couple days ago. Chris Kuc tweeted this afternoon that Hutton sustained a hand injury while beating the snot out of GR’s goaltender. This is a depth move to help Rockford as much, if not more, than the parent club.
