Should The Blackhawks Bring Back Dustin Byfuglien?

On Monday news broke that the Winnipeg Jets and Dustin Byfuglien are working “toward a mutual contract termination over the next several days.”

Which means the former Blackhawks forward/defenseman will be available soon.

Many fans are asking: should the Blackhawks bring Big Buff back to Chicago?

If the Blackhawks do bring Byfuglien back in a Hawks sweater in the future, it should be for “One More Shift.”

Agree he hasn’t skated since last season, at 34 just having had surgery, not likely be ready for Nhl any time soon if he plays at all again.

  • February 3, 2020 at 4:51 pm

If they want to get their money’s worth on an All-U-Can-Eat buffet, then bring him back for one night. Lol

Thanks for everything Vancouver related, Buff…but stay in Canada.

  • February 3, 2020 at 4:51 pm

I would talked about Buff to see how he feels before I do anything I have to see him skate in some competition he could help the Blackhawk defense

  • February 3, 2020 at 5:29 pm

You guys are forgetting that Big Buff is a freak of nature and has been playing the game for years. If he actually wants to come back to the NHL I doubt it would be very difficult for him even with the surgery.

    Still don’t see this happening.

  • February 3, 2020 at 5:34 pm

Bring him back. If it doesn’t work out he can play offensive tackle for the bears.

  • February 3, 2020 at 6:27 pm

What a joke! We have to stop recycling Rx- stars who are past prime. And for $7M??
Let’s have a REAL conversation again about
    A. What we need, both short-term and mid-term
    B. Who’s worth keeping, who can go (including what the “Seattle factor” will do to the team!)
    C. When is the Colliton experiment over?
    D. Who should replace STAN?

  • February 3, 2020 at 6:32 pm

Hawk 4 Life, WIN would buy him out. The Hawks could sign him for 2 years at $1.5M or 750 a year. I dont care if he plays this year.

  • February 3, 2020 at 6:57 pm

If he is in Hockey shape and wants to play who are we hurting by taking a look?Dehaan,Seabrook,Gus,Gilbert,Maata,Koekkoek?Silly me,the Hawks are a hard enough physical team to play against without him.And the powerplay doesnt need someone like him either. It is rolling along. Not to worry, there would still be plenty of room for Mitchell,Carllson, and the rest.

  • February 3, 2020 at 6:57 pm

Do we get a group discount from the Nhl if all of our defensemen are on LTIR? Obviously I’m being facetious but unless he’s willing to sign for the minimum like Hawks in 2020 suggested, I don’t see how this helps the Hawks get better..I almost wish he would sign for the minimum, I’d put him at forward and let him dig pucks out of the corner for Toews and Kubalik..pipe dream of course, but that would be worth exploring..

Sooner go after Kapanen for Crawford and retain half his salary for them. Anderson left game tonite for Leafs after 1st period, injured foot.

  • February 3, 2020 at 7:20 pm

I get the options for salaries and playing time but let’s keep asking the questions – does this move us forward? And if so what could be the next moves?
Problem is- we don’t see the strategy that Stan has?! We ont even know if he HAS a strategy- or in s he just flying by the seat of his pants to keep his job! Are we buying? Or selling? Are we thinking 2021 or 2025?
    We clearly aren’t thinking 2020….

  • February 3, 2020 at 7:39 pm

    That is an easy one:

  • February 3, 2020 at 8:02 pm

    How about Bob Murray.

    100 lbs heavier.

  • February 3, 2020 at 8:28 pm

Stephen Johns scored a goal tonite, first game in close to 2 years, good to see.

  • February 3, 2020 at 8:47 pm

Buff is way in the past. Let’s look ahead.

Good stuff on Stephen Johns. Hope he stays healthy.

  • February 3, 2020 at 10:06 pm

Ex-Blackhawks like Versteeg, Burish, Sharp say that Buff was both the best and worst lineman they ever had. Depended how he felt that night. And that was when he was in his prime.

This team needs consistency, not a guy who isn’t even sure he wants to lace the skates up anymore.

One more shift would be okay.

  • February 3, 2020 at 10:23 pm

Slayer, though the same thing about 33 on RW.

  • February 3, 2020 at 10:28 pm

Ian, we need to get more good players to add to the young wave. So that kapenen might be a decent player.

This is where the player/good prospect is better then a pick for one of the goalies.

  • February 3, 2020 at 10:56 pm

Buff would be a better served to maybe retire soon or maybe start coaching I’d like to see that maybe? He was a great hawk player but lets move to youth! Stop bringing back old players, unless it’s Hossa! I wish..

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:01 pm

Great beanpot game tonight bc v. Bu. Vlasic looked pretty good, Wise not so much. Got benched for 3 periods. Game went to double ot

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:04 pm

Ian – BU-BC in the Beanpot. Great game – BU wins in 2nd OT, Vlasic assists on game winner. Was impressed by Vlasic, he is mobile with a big wingspan. Played a solid shutdown role as a freshman against a strong veteran BC team. He looks like a strong prospect but is still pretty raw and will still take some time to fill out that big frame. Jake Wise played sparingly – looks like he’s a 4th liner. I know he has battled a lot of injuries but he is well down the depth chart.

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:20 pm

Jack Who? Oh, oh yeah Jack Wise! Thx Stan, another beauty!
Kapanen, well being late twice for the same coach tells you something that isn’t right. He would be an upgrade from Nylander though but if so, no vodka in the rooms!
He is a scrappy player, more grit than our Nylander but still not the type of big, skating winger we need to play right wing for Toews. But if he’s available and we send Sikura, Gilbert and Delia..and a 3rd round pick? Well, Leafs would not be that crazy…maybe Mitchell or Beaudin for Kapanen!!!

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:23 pm

Really like the good news on Mitch Barratt and now Vlassic. Even though we traded Buckaroo, if Vlassic can be a 4/5 Defensemen then we still have Four Horsemen. People who wish bad on the Horsemen for becoming good NHL Defensemen, still early though BoQ Mitch could be studs and if Beau-which people are down on can turn out to be a 5/6 Defensemen.

Murphy should still be in prime yrs for awhile.

Then we still have the Four Horsemen that will anchor the 4th Cup.

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:26 pm

Great to see after his concussion battles, Stephen Johns getting a goal and an assist tonight for the Stars!

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:36 pm

I liked Wise after draft. 64 has turned into a good 4th line center and now hes good at faceoffs after first yr-just like Krugs did. So maybe we donot need Wise-like we did, anymore. Barratt is the Shawzer like player we need and he is coming soon enough.

  • February 3, 2020 at 11:45 pm

Why would the hawks trade Mitchell or Beaudin for kapanen?

I get you dont like bowman. But your thoughts and opinions are god awful.

  • February 4, 2020 at 12:10 am

I watched some of the BU/BC game too and I saw Vlassic make a couple good plays but I also seen him imitate a turnstile a couple time. Big with big wingspan but I thought he looked pretty slow afoot. No way he skates well enough to play in the NHL unless he improves skating and quickness. He’s only 18 and as big and lanky as he is he probably will improve in those areas – will it be enough is the question.

I saw Jake Wise make a couple nice plays but not enough to give me a good report on him. He seems like “just a guy”. Hopefully he finds his game after being set back with injuries.

  • February 4, 2020 at 12:15 am

Buf is one of my all time favorites. One of the best moments in the 2010 playoffs was when Buf ragdoll’d Pronger.

But the train has probably left the station. Maybe offer But a minimum salary to play the Tomas Holmstrom role where he stands in front of the net on the PP where no one will be able to move him out of the way and he’s good at poking in rebounds. Heck, with our PP – try anything.

  • February 4, 2020 at 12:39 am

MRFenn? Again everyone has their own opinions and many on this board share the same so chill my friend. We are short on prospects in Rockford on the wing that’s why Beaudin (maybe, if he’s lucky a 5th or 6th dman of the future ) is worth trading for Kanapen, an NHL player who has proived himseld already!Beaudin is 5’10”? Do you want to see another smallish dman on the blue line? Boqvist and maybe Mitchell is enough! Infact, Boqvist is enough! We need a John Carlson, a Pietrangelo, a Brett Burns, a Trouba, a Morrisey…players with size a skill on the blue line who can skate! Seriously, you envision Boqvist, Mitchell and Beaudin on the blue line for the Hawks at the same time? This isn’t midget hockey, it’s the NHL! Who comes up with the puck in the corner, Ovie or let’s say Boqvist, Mitchell or your new fav Beaudin? Thus trade Beaudin for Kapanen! No brainer! Eyes Wide Shut! Get some skill & gritt because if you haven’t noticed who are call ups have been the last 5 years then you need to do some research or ask Stan Bowman who is his top six prospect in Rockford or in Junior hockey/NCAA? NOBODY!

  • February 4, 2020 at 12:46 am

    1. Is bigg buff healthy? And ready to play? And contribute?
    2. Would he play wing or defense? Amazing to me he played defense after tying for the team lead in goals for the playoffs. So only if he at least plays wing in most cases. Sooo a little of both?
    3. Has Kane forgiven him for punching him in the back of the head?
    4. How about Caggs for messing him up?
    5. Is this team going for the playoffs or not?
If the answer to all five (including the double questions) then the answer is a clear cut YES. Any one of these outside maybe question 4 gives you the answer….

  • February 4, 2020 at 2:22 am

Was not thrilled on the Beaudin reviews. He is a small guy who relies on being smart and tricky with his positioning. Not my words.I would toss him in to get a Kapanen.I too would support getting a couple of bigger sized defensemen.

  • February 4, 2020 at 6:09 am

MS liked Vlassic too but agree he is long way from Nhl at thos point, time on his side though and liked that coach trusted him with game on the line. Wise seems to have confidence issues from injurues, hopefully he straightens that out. Had a couple of good chances in 2nd, nice looking shot but didn’t finish.

Shea in early game was impressive, be interesting to see if gets elc or not. Could offer him Ahl contract or be ufa on Aug. 1st i think.

Would like to see them go after a Sergachev who will be tough for Bolts to sign and protect. Or look at what Oikers want for a Bouchard who is log jammed in minors, to compliment current defense.

  • February 4, 2020 at 10:04 am

I like Kapanen and would be OK with parting with Beaudin to get him, but I doubt Toronto would trade him for only Beaudin – so what else would it take? If Saad and Kapanen had the same cap hit I would rather have Saad, but they don’t and that $2.8M difference will be needed to resign Strome and Kubalik.

  • February 4, 2020 at 10:22 am

EBONYRAPTOR – “the Tomas Holmstrom role where he stands in front of the net on the PP where no one will be able to move him out of the way”

Reminds me of the commercial of the walrus playing goalie…

    Good stuff!

  • February 4, 2020 at 10:39 am

Ian they are saying Andersen has an upper body injury and there is speculation it could be a concussion-he has already had a few.

  • February 4, 2020 at 10:40 am

Hull – you should consider being a Leafs fan – then you would have an unlimited set of problems to complain about – lol! What a dumpster fire that situation had become. They are in cap hell with a group that hasn’t won anything and isn’t likely to anytime soon. They blow a 2 goal lead in the 3rd period to the Panthers without Barkov at home in a game they really needed. They better trade one of those forwards for some defense or goalie help or they have no shot at even making the playoffs.

  • February 4, 2020 at 10:52 am

    Joey – it’s a walrus – ridiculous. I love that commercial.

  • February 4, 2020 at 11:02 am

Noonan thx, was watching mostly beanpot game and flipped to Leafs and thoughf i heard commentator say his foot.

  • February 4, 2020 at 12:02 pm

Leafs say neck injury to Andersen, not travelling to New York with team, no timetable for return.

  • February 4, 2020 at 1:25 pm

There is only 1 Center listed on TSN,s Trade Bait top 25 List.Someone may overpay for Strome. With the encouraging reports on Barratts improved skating and overall play the Hawks could save over 5 Million on the Cap.Maybe get our 2nd round pick back and a forward prospect.

  • February 4, 2020 at 2:36 pm

I have said this before NJ traded Hall to AZ. If AZ is willing to trade him, I would inquire if I was stan.

    There would be the lines:
    Knapf/Carp/Smith or whoever.

That could be an awesome 4 lines rolling

  • February 4, 2020 at 2:54 pm

Arizona wont trade him. Especially not to a team theyre battling with.

Reports are Crawford is starting. Interesting he gets 2 in a row…

  • February 4, 2020 at 3:02 pm

Tim, if there was any Defensemen involved for Kapenen I would be fine with Beau, and only him, because of the down reports.

Unless we, need, to include Beau to make a trade thats good for us-our add, then keep him and give it time.

I would like to add a FW like Kapenen and a Defensemen like Ians TB guy and would be fine and think its worth trading 50 and Beau to do it.

Longterm thinking here. Young wave core and role thinking.

  • February 4, 2020 at 3:19 pm

Toronto isn’t going to take Beaudin – they have Rasmus Sandin who was taken a few picks after Beaudin who they seem to be very high on. They are the same type of player. They also need someone who can play now – I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go after Dillon from San Jose.

Rusty – Crow has great career numbers against the Wild and since they play back to back he goes tonight and Lehner will go tomorrow.

  • February 4, 2020 at 4:31 pm

Bring back Buff. For the rest of this season see what he can do. Besides I can pull my Byfuglien jersey out of the closet.

  • February 4, 2020 at 6:07 pm

Tallon saying he wants to land a defenseman before the tdl, never happen not likely, but Serron Noel a 6’5″ goal scoring power forward would look good playing with 12 and 17 or 77 and 88 next season.

  • February 4, 2020 at 6:30 pm

Crow getting the nod tonight because Boston is the tougher opponent and Lehner will start against them tomorrow. Besides, Crow has actually been better than Robin the last month or so.

  • February 4, 2020 at 6:40 pm

I’m very chill. We don’t have to share the same opinions. You cry about the same things that make no sense every thread post.
Bowman isn’t going anywhere, deal with it.
