Blackhawks Hit Rock Bottom, Get Blown Out By Red Wings

If Jeremy Colliton’s seat was hot before Sunday night, it should be vacant on Monday morning.

Let’s set the table: the Detroit Red Wings came into the United Center for their third game in four nights. They lost on home ice to the Flames on Thursday. On Saturday, Detroit got embarrassed in Montreal, losing 6-1 in an ugly game. So the Red Wings should have been both tired and frustrated coming into Sunday night’s game.

Chicago hadn’t scored a second goal before the third period yet this season. The Hawks were winless. And in their first two games on home ice this season, the Blackhawks had been outscored 8-2.

The Blackhawks were without Patrick Kane. Kane, Juhjar Khiara and Riley Stillman were in COVID protocol and unable to play in the game. So Ian Mitchell, Reese Johnson and Adam Gaudette were getting a chance in the lineup.

Could Chicago take a lead for the first time this season? No. Lucas Raymond opened the scoring at 5:41 into the game.

But the Blackhawks were able to tie the game before the end of the period. Tyler Johnson scored his first as a member of the Blackhawks at 12:35 into the first.

Jonathan Toews picked up his first point of the season with an assist on Johnson’s goal.

The Blackhawks out-shot the Red Wings 11-8 in the first period. Two mediocre teams played about as well as one would think.

Unfortunately for the Blackhawks and the fans who paid to watch the game in person, the second period was a debacle.

Detroit out-shot the Blackhawks 19-6 in the second period. Carter Rowney gave the Wings a 2-1 lead at 4:22 into the second. Vladislav Namestnikov scored 3:11 later to make the score 3-1 in favor of Detroit. And Tyler Bertuzzi scored a third Detroit goal inside a five-minute window to bury the Hawks.

Dominik Kubalik was able to score a nice power play goal at 12:10 into the second to give the Blackhawks their first two-goal performance in the first two periods of a game to date. But the Hawks were still chasing two when he scored.

Toews picked up a second assist on Kubalik’s goal.

Sadly, Raymond scored his second of the night to extend the lead back to three with 60 seconds left in the middle period.

The Blackhawks heard it from the crowd as they went to the room a second time. And they should. The start of this season has been awful, and the second period on Sunday night is the worst 20 minutes of the season thus far.

Maybe we can take a positive out of the first two periods that the Hawks’ penalty kill was 4-4 and they had two goals?

Chicago came out of the room and attacked to open the third. Henrik Borgstrom’s first goal as a member of the Hawks, with assists from Dylan Strome and Gaudette, came at 1:58 into the third period and the lead was back to two.

But, as the Hawks have done far too frequently this year, they opened the door for Detroit again. Jake McCabe went to the box 22 seconds after the Borgstrom goal. Chicago killed a fifth penalty in the game, but the next power play went to Detroit as well. Connor Murphy was guilty of hooking at 6:44.

Could the Blackhawks’ penalty kill handle six in one night? No. Raymond scored his third of the night — his first career hat trick — to make the score 6-3 in favor of Detroit.

At which point the Blackhawks should have provided a formal apology to anyone who paid full price to watch the game in person at the United Center.

The Hawks got a power play with Bertuzzi in the box. Moritz Seider joined him less than 30 seconds later and the Blackhawks had a two-man advantage.

It appeared Toews scored his first of the year at 11:04. The official directly behind the net was in good position and clearly called it a good goal, but Detroit challenged that Kirby Dach, who was getting crosschecked by two Red Wings at the same time, interfered with the goaltender before Toews could slam home the goal.

The officials took the goal off the board. Detroit still led by three.

Seconds after the re-start, Alex Nedeljkovic made an incredible save for Detroit to keep the score 6-3.

With seven seconds left in the second penalty, Namestikov was called for delay of game for trapping a puck in front of the Detroit net in a scrum. So the Blackhawks would get even more extended power play time. Colliton used his timeout before the Hawks went to work for seven seconds…

During the timeout, the players took the dry erase board from the coaches and worked on their own power play system. The players. If there was ever a damning visual for this coaching staff, you got one right there.

Chicago did nothing with another power play, and with two second left in the final advantage Dylan Strome went to the box for four minutes with only 5:24 left in regulation and the Hawks down three. Chicago killed all four minutes with Strome in the box and you could hear a “Fire Colliton” chant in the United Center.

On the night the Hawks’ sellout streak came to an end, they made history.

By the end of the night, the Blackhawks had broken the NHL record for amount of time without having a lead to start the season. The clock will continue counting in the Hawks’ next game, against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Who don’t suck as much as the rebuilding Red Wings.

Will this be the last time we have to watch a Colliton-coached Blackhawks team?

At this point it should be considered derelict of duty to not replace Colliton. Obviously he is in too far over his head to have any chance to turn things around now.

  • October 24, 2021 at 8:58 pm

This entire coaching staff needs to go along with Stanley. Might be the most lost team ever for the Hawks. This team needs leadership behind the bench not this clown show.

  • October 24, 2021 at 8:59 pm

Deciphering Danny’s tweet: “poor people we’ll welcome you back with open arms”. If they fire Kid Coach, do it right and give StanBo his walking papers too because he’s the reason for this mess that will take YEARS to straighten out. Looks like the Red Wings are doing it right by getting a HOCKEY GUY to do their rebuilding. What a chitshow!!!

Is it possible to loathe a man I have never met??
And I’m generally a very nice person.

That is all. Carry on, fellas.

  • October 24, 2021 at 9:05 pm

Nothing going on here that a good promotion can’t paper over. How about “Matt Walker Night”?

    Right Stan? Right Danny?

Its been fun but i dont pay good money to watch losers my money will no longer be spent on the blackhawks true fans remember the days of 1000 people in the building boycott this terrible management and shitty players like kirby dach he is a first round pick i dont think so how about u focus on putting quality players on the ice instead of pieces of shit off the ice lets focus on hockey and the fans forget who u hire off the ice and learn how togrow from with in not give are away our talent for shit rocky wake up buddy your starting to become your dad dollar bill

  • October 24, 2021 at 9:15 pm

players have lost faith in all coaches. the handing over the board seemed like a move from slap shot. JC lost the team, fans have lost pride, players have lost pride, ownership has lost thier backbone. will uc become 2000-2006 once again? will fans become smart again on not going to games?
players skate but players with play for a coach and these guys dont play. will player leadership step up and hold a player only meeting?
dcat should of bitch slap JC with that board. PERIOD

  • October 24, 2021 at 9:19 pm

This is beyond painful. Nothing worth commenting on.

    Where has ER been?

  • October 24, 2021 at 9:28 pm

My father took me to my first Blackhawks game in 1961 when I was 5 years old. Tonight was the first time in my life as a fan that I hoped we would lose. First freakin time in 60 years, and there is absolutely no joy in admitting that, but this embarrassing shit show must end. If Rocky doesn’t fire SB and JC immediately he’s a fool, and the effects of this start will take years to reverse. At least I lived to see 4 cups. I guess I’m just greedy.

  • October 24, 2021 at 9:42 pm

This team as it exists now is not competitive and is unprepared to compete at the NHL level for 20 minutes let alone 60 minutes. I have never seen the blatant handing over of the white board to a tired group of players on the ice. This team’s forwards don’t backcheck or pickup
Guys their assigned men on rushes into their zone. The fire drill defensive system continues. It’s like these guys have never skated together before. As bad as all that is, Fleury is a floundering flopping human PEZ dispenser and should split time with Lanks. It’s as bad and embarrassing as it gets now. Don’t know whatelse to say everybody.

  • October 24, 2021 at 9:48 pm

If you are peeking ahead, I think that November 1st is the next chance for a point or 2. Leafs,Blues and Canes twice coming up the next week. This is gonna get uglier.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:10 pm

There is no point in just firing JC. SB has to go. Fire SB first, hire a GM who knows hockey and let him hire his coach and let the true rebuild begin. SB made this mess. His arrogance has put this team yrs away from being competitive.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:27 pm

    Where do I begin?

    UC not sold out.

A TON of Red Wings fans in attendance.

The scalpers who own a lot of the season tix can’t sell them. The people sitting behind me were bragging about how much they paid for theirs, and it wasn’t a lot. Against Detroit.

Isolated but very audible chants of “Fire Colliton” in unison could be heard from the crowd.

    Awful game by DeBrincat.

In post-game, where the only things dumber than the answers are the questions ( “Seth, you haven’t had a lead this season. Is that difficult for the team?” ) Toews and Jones say they are behind the coach. What else are they going to say. And that, coupled with a lot of babysitting by the post-game radio crew repeating the mantra of “the boys aren’t getting the breaks …. they’ve got to find a way to quit letting that bother them” and “we have to remember that Patrick Kane wasn’t in the lineup”.

So they fire Colliton ….. who then? Marc Crawford as interim? Who would they bring in now?

Danny Wirtz’s tweet was a joke re: the sellout streak ……. a new and diverse fanbase will now have opportunities for tickets? What the hell is he talking about? Can this bunch not get out of their own way.

I’ve been to the UC for a lot of different things. This was my worst experience ever.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:30 pm

The coach has lost his team and that’s pretty obvious…The chalk board should be the last straw. And while they’re at it show Stan the door. I won’t be heading to the U/C until changes are made.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:32 pm

Bowman just got a promotion so I don’t think he’ll get the axe unless he refuses to deliver the axe himself to Colliton

I said on the last thread that this game would tell the hockey world what the players think of Colliton and the answer is not much – they obviously feel that he’s not going to give them any competitive advantage no leadership

Until there’s a proper NHL coach (I would be fine with Babcock – Toews knows him from Team Canada and he needs an entry point back to the NHL) this will not get better but with a real NHL coach it will get better

I can’t be too hard on the players given the lack of leadership behind the bench – they are better than this

As an aside I’m not sure why Kurashev played over Entwistle – the former has done little and the latter has been playing well

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:38 pm

Stan won’t hire Babcock. He’s also smarter than StanBo.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:44 pm

The “accelerated rebuild” is unravelling faster than Enron.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:57 pm

Stanbo isn’t goi f anywhere. He is the GM of USA hockey, highly unlikely he gets the boot. Rocky was great working from the hole his old man created, not so much in the on he dug. The decks need to be cleared. The team has quit, where’s erb with his heavy dose of this is the players fault. This team is cooked and the Coach is chicken little.

  • October 24, 2021 at 10:59 pm

The end of the sellouts was never going to be a big problem. Like the Government and every other business you always have your COVID Pandemic parachute to open that will help you land softly and serve as a convenient excuse for failures.

  • October 24, 2021 at 11:22 pm

I don’t think Colliton will be coaching the next game. The big question is who is this “hockey guy” everyone is talking about. Don’t think the players want anything to do with Babcock after the debacle in Toronto.

  • October 24, 2021 at 11:54 pm

So … I guess playoffs are no longer part of the conversation.

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:09 am

Yes , Rocky has dug himself quite a hole. After giving his GM a promo after a ten-year mostly failed body of work, he will keep him in order to save face.

After the Jones trade and massive extension I posted that this was beyond nuts for a team with many needs.

There’s too much focus on a bad coach. How much better would Q be doing with this lineup? After all these years of drafting we just have one potential star in Dach. A below average lineup and a pipeline ranked near the bottom.

Severe mismanagement from Rocky, McDonut and Stan with no changes expected. If I performed half as bad at my job I would have been out years ago.

  • October 25, 2021 at 6:41 am

They fired Quennville when the team had a 6-6-2 record. Fire Colliton right now, they would be doing him a favor. Fire Bowman too… give him more time to make a mess of the Olympics team. Think things are bad? Well, this awful team is right up against the Cap. This team will be bad for years!

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:00 am

especially after past few seasons-drafts… SB- trading 1st round picks- in Middle of re-build???
Betting on HOF guy’s ( one admitting to end of season injury -not fully healed,, and other Sat out entire year, and has been trending down for several years) – is especially naive!

Normally- in rebuilds- you trade for picks… SB trades them away??? Go figure.

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:05 am

Mr. Wirtz- it’s not that tough a decision! Stan Bowman has failed as a GM. Remember back to 2008-2015, then decide if you want a team like THAT? Or do you want what Stan built today?
Fire Stan! Fire Colliton (Sure- the “youngest” coach in the NHL, the most inexperienced and one with a terrible performance record!)
Now- do the right thing and bring in some hockey guys- not baseball, or basketball or Accounting experts- HOCKEY GUYS!
Let’s get this ship righted now!

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:12 am

Its been hard to watch, especially given the moves, to win now. This isn’t all on JC, but he will be the sacrificial lamb. Bowman should be accountable, but that’s not his nature-you won’t find humility coming from arrogance. The players should be as well-they actually have most of the power.

This really might be a lost year-partly all in with a bluff hand?

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:25 am

I think they will give the JV Coach another 4 games, and if he doesn’t get the team playing drastically better, they will replace him with Marc Crawford. The thing is that there is no chemistry on this team, guys still do not know their roles. JV coach has better players sitting in the pressbox or in Rockford then then the ones he is trotting out, someof these guys should not be in the NHL. Why was Gaudette sitting and Kurashev getting first-line minutes. Why are Gustafson and McCabe getting minutes while Mitchell and Beaudin were in Rockford? Why was Reece Johnson in Rockford while Jhaira, who can’t fight and plays soft gets minutes? Why would you ever sit Entwhistle? Why was Strome in the pressbox when he came ready to play this season? JV Coach – your time is at hand…take the architect with you!!

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:48 am

We should go into business as a fortune tellers, because unless you really do not know the game of NHL hockey, you saw this coming in 2018 when Q was fired and Gilligan was hired.

    Duncan Keith thriving in Edmonton.

Q has made the Panthers an incredibly fun team to watch. Similarities to the 2010 Hawks are spooky, if you are watching FLA nowadays.

    But hey!
Grape flavor Kool-Aid is being served today….step right up, Jim Jones.

    To Bowman and Colliton:
    TIck tock guys. Tick tock.

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:55 am

The rebuild is still intact. Picks will be coming. Getting minimum 2 picks for MAF (if he doesn’t retire) One of them a number 1. 2 picks for deHaan (if he doesn’t pop a shoulder) One possibly a number 1. Look what Savard brought back last year. A pick each for Carp, Gus, Delia, Subban. Possibly something for Shaw’s $$. That’s 9 picks. Heck Gus would have gotten us a total of 2 picks. Not bad.

Stink it up now so our pick is protected. Get as many number ones for ’23 to get a shot at Bedard.

Heck we might rival AZ with picks. They have 8 of them in the first two rounds this year.

    Go Hawks…………Go get Torts!

  • October 25, 2021 at 7:59 am

If someone is sick first you treat the symptoms then the cause – you can argue SB is the cause but the on ice product is the symptom and that can be made better with an NHL coach

I’m not laying all the blame on JC but until we see this roster properly coached we don’t even know how serious the disease is

What the Hawks are playing now barely resembles NHL style hockey – they are not well coached and haven’t been in the entire time of JC’s tenure

Colliton has been able to get pretty good games out of rookies and young players because they will do whatever it takes to establish themselves in the league but with veteran players JC can’t teach or motivate them to play the way they need to – can’t get the best out of them and that is his job in a nutshell

Most of us agree that this year’s roster is better than last year’s yet the on ice results are worse – the first step has to be replace JC with a proven NHL coach (I have been lobbying for Babs but Crawford is more realistic although I would fire all the assistants and let Crawford pick his own)

The issue of Bowman should be addressed secondly after we see what this roster really is capable of

  • October 25, 2021 at 8:34 am

I live in Canada and I watched the game last night on T.V. ! I played at college in the 60’s and then Senior A in several Ontario towns ! The club looks like a Junior B club ! The whole staff running the club don’t know what they’re doing ! Some of the players are cruising around and are overpaid showboats ! Weee, look at me , is the expression ! I still play in an over 55 league in a Toronto suburb and Hawks play no fundementals ! They are all over the ice all mixed up ! After coming to Chicago over the last decade and spending 10’s of thousands ,I won’t be coming anytime soon to see that garbage ! It’s just disgusting too watch ! Changes have to be made soon , best , POPS 4

  • October 25, 2021 at 9:04 am

On paper, a lot of ‘experts’ thought this was a playoff quality roster
But so far it appears that Toews and Kane aren’t physically able to carry this team with super-player skills of the past
Still other teams have been quite successful squeezing max performance out of seemingly average rosters with no clear superstars (Expansion VGK, for example)
Now, a half dozen games in, it’s clear we don’t have the leadership (coaching) to make an NHL team even look like it would be competitive in the AHL
I was one of those willing to give it time, but the Colliton experiment needs to end NOW

  • October 25, 2021 at 9:20 am

    April 20, 2017: Nashville 4 – Chicago 1 (Nashville wins series 4- 0)

April 21, 2017: Stan Bowman is removed as GM of the Chicago Blackhawks

The thing that even the Stan moonies and apologists know needs to happen now, should have happened 1,645 days ago.

  • October 25, 2021 at 9:47 am

All I can say is Stan was lucky to have a daddy named Scotty

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:11 am

JR Roman- prior to start of season- yes- I saw the glass half full- SB could flip these assets for many decent picks… however, every game these guys play and suck… that scenario – is NOT close to happening. MAF and DeHaan look terrible thus far- getting high picks or quantity is laughable.

Only good news– SB is probably better off with 6-8 5th round picks versus 3 1st round picks- judging by recent Draft history

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:16 am

Furthermore– doesn’t really explain the $Jones deal- Money/loss of pick

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:29 am

Rocky?? Come out come out wherever you are!!!

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:34 am

When a lone voice of reason in a sea of anger ( that would be Ian) calls for a change, then you know the train wreck is complete and there is no need for an autopsy. Total embarrassment doesn’t even begin to describe it. The handing over of the white board means one of 2 things: Colliton doesn’t know what he is doing, or he is so frustrated by the team’s play it has become if you can do better then have at it. That didn’t work either. On the bright side, tickets are dirt cheap for the true hockey fan, or you can go to Rockford to watch the future. Either way, hawk fans deserve far better.

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:46 am

I usually get first 3 rows end Ice Hogs for $25

where are prices for similar seats for Hawks now? Anyone know?

when they get to below that level- I might consider paying the upcharge for beers/etc.

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:49 am

This kinda reminds me of that season when Hawks- couldn’t lose to start season

    complete opposite side of spectrum

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:57 am

A structured system played correctly with relentless backchecking and positioning makes even less talented teams competitive in this league, i.e the Islanders,Canes,Bruins, and yes that means employing a zone coverage and layered 1-2-2 or 1-3-1 alignment that prevents being constantly overwhelmed on the rush. Get a solid positionally stable Goalie that soaks up the puck and controls rebounds. It’s not exhilarating but it’s a beginning.

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:57 am

@Wrap, I agree that the Hawks can not continue with Colliton at the helm. It’s simply not working, this team is completely lifeless right now and JC is not getting through.

However, If Bowman can’t bring himself to fire Colliton without prompting from ownership, then clearly he is not doing his job. If I am the Wirtz group, I simply let Bowman proceed without any guidance or direction. It’s clear to everyone that Colliton is not working out right now and a change needs to be made. If Bowman can see that and make the change quickly and decisively, he is at least showing he can execute his position. However, if Bowman can’t do what obviously needs to be done, perhaps he isn’t the right man for the job either. It’s that simple.

Hell Michael Corleone replaced Tom Hagen because he wasn’t a wartime consiglieri. If Bowman can’t do what needs to be done here, perhaps he isn’t a “rebuild-time” GM.

I still think this roster can make the post season and be a disruptive influence in the playoffs, but I don’t see that happening with JC. If a change is not made in the next week, the Wirtzs are perhaps not as committed to winning as they appeared to be during the Cup run of the last decade…

I want to drink the cool aid, I really do, and I think we still can, if the Hawks make a change soon. This season does not need to be lost, but it can’t go on like this. Something has to give.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:03 am

300 level tickets for Wednesday are cheaper than a beer. Prices starting at $10, and there are PLENTY of them.

No chance that game sells out.

I feel for Hossa. He deserves better.

3 Reasons to Be Happy Today:

    1. We may have bottomed out. Things can only get better.
    2. Toto has pulled back the curtain and exposed the truth that even Stan’s Fans can no longer deny. Admission, surrender & acceptance are the 1st steps in recovery.
    3. De ja vu all over again. We can still do it IF Bowman and Colliton are fired*
    a. Denis Savard fired 4 games (1-2-1) into 2008-09 – Blackhawks reach Conference Finals
    b. Mike Yeo fired 19 games (7-9-3) into 2018-19 – St. Louis wins the Cup

*Bowman must be fired because he is not likely to replace Colliton with a veteran, successful and strong-willed coach that is needed (as per the examples cited above).

As a side note: I stopped visiting and posting on this site because it was overrun by a few that were not interested or capable of honest discourse about Colliton or Bowman. It just wasn’t fun any more.

Knowing every Blackhawks fan is a state of despair I wanted to offer hope (even though it is predicated on a big IF). Hang in there folks. Better times await.

After this post I will go away again. Be well. Be safe. Be happy.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:22 am

Did anyone really think that Sheldon Brookbank could run a NHL defense? The guy was a total hack as a player thus it translates to the shit show we have now. And no thanks making Crawford the next coach, time to clean house!

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:33 am

Miroslav: The problem for all of this mess rests solely on the doorstep of Stanley G. Bowman. Kid Coach will only be the scapegoat move for Bowman. Rocky needs to move his kid back to the booze warehouse and get a HOCKEY GUY(good examples: Steve Yzerman, Brian Maclellan, Ken Holland, Joe Sakic, Doug Wilson or one of their Asst. GM’s) and just oversee what he’s doing to restore the faith of Blackhawk fans. This season is already lost. Time to pull the plug finally and to give at least hope to the ever dwindling fan base that is occurring under the watch of Stan Bowman.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:48 am

A quick fix for the remainder of the year would be Bruce Boudreau. He is honest enough to immediately point out the flaws of this team,s roster and system without appearing to be too threatening to Bowman until the Olympics are over. I would rather have a real front office with Torts or Babs but I know that will never happen as long as Bowman is here.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:49 am

John Galt: You should not be run off by the actions of a few people that cannot except or face reality, yes others have been run off of here and that’s not right. But than again those people are mostly quiet right now or singing other tunes. You are and will be missed here, you are a voice of reason.

What ever happened to Morrison? Miss his optimism

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:54 am

So many issues . . . but last night exposed a weakness that is at the core of the Hawks demise. Team Speed, north to south. Hawks are dreadfully slow north to south. I’ve never seen a rush up ice with 3 skaters in tandem, always one guy, looking back, sideways, waiting or drifting in over the blue line. NO SUPPORT! Speed kills! Kirby is slow, his size and length make him look like he’s got some speed but he can not out skate “ironsides” horrible. Kirby is always caught from behind and easy to detach him from the puck = weakling. I remember the early days of Brandon Sadd and how many penalties he drew on rush up the boards making defenders hook, grab or trip. Sadd had some speed. The team as a whole is way too slow, you watch enough real hockey and you see teams even WINGS last night that get up ice, in the zone and lean to the blue paint in front of the goalie and take it to the net, and with support in front and d-men drifting in. With the lack of speed it clogs up the neutral zone, make it easy to defend at the blue line. Hawks need speed and size to Dump & Chase. So here we are . . . with lots of average players and no five on five game changers . . .. period. Hence the power play effectiveness, win the draw and the space is there, if Hawks need to EARN THAT TIME AND SPACE = WORK, you get what you get on five on five. Still hopeful . . .

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:59 am

There are 2 choices I’d like to see as the new GM if that were to happen
Steve Sullivan and Jeff Gorton are those choices.

It’s good to see people waking up to the fact that Stan and JC are clearly
    in over their ski’s.

Right now though, I’m still too cheap to fire either Stan or JC as ticket sales
    are way down.

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:02 pm

hey I got a question for anyone who lives in Chicago and still goes to the games.

When Rocky Wirtz took control in 2007, one of the first things he did was put home games on TV (aside from getting Bob Pulford the hell away from the UC and thereby eliminating a huge cancer).

One of the next things he did was sit in row 17 or so, Sec 119. Hanging out w/the fans.

….. Is he still sitting there, or has he been absent?

That is the true litmus test to see if he is still engaged.

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:04 pm

Anybody else feel like the Colliton Experiment has been like one long Geico commercial and last night was the punchline?
What JC did last night would be like me prepping a patient for surgery by going into the room, giving them a needle, IV tubing, & the IV antibiotic & saying: “here, have at it”.
This is like the circus trip of years past–except, guess what? this team is the damn circus.
At least in 2004-05 we didn’t have to pay $12 for an adult beverage.
I’m one of the most optimistic people here but damn. I turned that trash off and watched Hocus Pocus with my girls for the 400th time last night.

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:10 pm

From next season on (forever) Hawks will spend 9,5 mil. of cap space for lazy 3rd pair Dman – will Columbus take him back if Hawks will eat 50% of cap?

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:28 pm

What is even worse and makes you wonder if the players have any freedom to speak frankly, is that the Hawks website says the players are taking responsibility and BACK Colliton 100 %
That is a freaking joke in its self. Why interview players, just put a team PR person out there to take questions…and they can just say, Kane backs JC, Toews backs JC….bla bla bla….nothing will change and next Hawks loss will be Wednesday vs the Leafs.

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:39 pm

So according to all of the Hawk reporters, Colliton had a battle drill/bag skate practice today which at the conclusion of he yelled and ordered all the players off the ice and out of the building with no lingering around. Me thinks this is the beginning of the end. Any thoughts from everyone?

  • October 25, 2021 at 12:40 pm

    Too little,too late?

  • October 25, 2021 at 1:26 pm

Tim W: He’s starting to regret taking the position and being led around by StanBo and knows now that he’ll be blamed for StanBo’s screwups????

  • October 25, 2021 at 1:29 pm

Woo when do the site go black wasn’t sure if this wa the right place.

Red Coats good for the, they can miss out on the top 3 high end player again. Let them win when it doesn’t matter.

Shocked to see the 0-5-1 would be as well if it’s was 2-5-1. Not going abasing is for playoffs but I like to be in it to win it then get blown out like Norte dame does every time even though they donot belong there anyways.

With a better defense feeling more experienced and another top 5 goalie in league 0-5-1?

When we go on a 12-2-5 run will post differently until then even at 0-5-1 we’re only one win ahead of a few teams for top picks. We need more elites and you get them from top 3 draft picks and ufa getting Jones is good when Dunks is older.

Remember this is it a corona division or all Canadian division. MTL will have to earn it they are boarderline top 20 team but are build for playoffs. That’s what I want build for playoffs who cares about reg season records. COL should be next best team in league now that TB is it as deep because of cap. What will happen.

For us let’s get another top 3 elite l8ke 77 so we can build a very strong core and then add a Hoss and Soupy to it.

Also first 5 games of every season donot mean anything for any team. Teams only getting up to speed.

  • October 25, 2021 at 1:41 pm

I haven’t seen any of the games been in training for ski season.

After reading half the posts which I did after I posted I see kind of what’s you guys think.

Roman, yea we’re still in full rebuild. It was fine we added some good players. You have to in order to let the younger players have a normal depth chart to actually play in a spot that they should be in and not in over there heads to high up the lines. Look how good that worked for the younger players last yr.

Sometimes it doesn’t go good even though you are better. So like Tim others said all last yr and I tried to get the roster with build for playoff type players and see which of the younger skilled players to keep. Progress process.

Still I think we needed two more elite from draft and another from ufa and you know how we get that. Top 5 skill draft player.

  • October 25, 2021 at 1:56 pm

Roman, it sure ARI is a bad as LA and other bottom 5 records last two yrs so I go with same 5 teams and ARI is it one of them/they could be though.

I am looking at 2020 season records last there was normal divisons to see what the records were like then and add that to last yr. see who’s there.

    -39 det
    -18 buf
    -17 Ana
    -15 ott
    -14 San
    -13 la
    -10 nj
    -4 chi
    -3 sea
    -2 ari
    -1 mtl

  • October 25, 2021 at 1:58 pm

So there’s the last two yrs and these first few games for teams that are under .500 combined totals.

I know not every team is same just an idea of where teams have been for awhile here and going by that we have another good opportunity to get another elite like 77 this draft and we WANT it please.

  • October 25, 2021 at 1:58 pm

Det still the shht the league last two play yrs.

  • October 25, 2021 at 2:03 pm

Exactly how do we get an elite player w/out having a 1st round draft pick unless by
some miracle we end up in the bottom 2 spots of the league?

  • October 25, 2021 at 2:45 pm

Morrison, glad to see your ok. I have agreed with you all along. The draft is where its at. The Cubs and Sox basically tanked and were patient for a few years. It got the Cubs a World Series and the Sox a playoff contender for years to come, and all because they picked high in the draft. The Bulls always had bad teams but always seemed to get the 7th pick in the draft. That’s not good enough. You need to at least get in the top 3 as you have stated many times. As for the Bears, they keep on trading their picks, consequently that do not have enough good players. This year we need to get in the top 2 as a result of the Jones trade.

  • October 25, 2021 at 2:49 pm

Stan Bowman and Jeremy Colliton both need to go. JC’s “system” is a joke. Bowman wouldn’t be GM anywhere if it wasn’t for his dad.

The Hawks are now the sole owners of the dubious “record” of not holding a lead in their first six games (just over 360 minutes). I see this being extended on Wednesday, unfortunately.

  • October 25, 2021 at 2:54 pm

When does the real season start…??

  • October 25, 2021 at 3:19 pm

    My observations:

    1) If the players are truly in support of Coach Colliton, his staff and system then my question to the players is “what’s wrong with this team?”
    2) The Red Wings are 12.5 million dollars under the cap and the Blackhawks are 4.7 million dollars over the cap. This speaks volumes as to the current state of the Blackhawks.
    3) Mackenzie Entwistle was a healthy scratch last night. This kid plays hard every game and deserves to be in the line-up.
    4) If Coach Colliton is fired then a solid choice to replace him is Assistant Coach Lane Lambert of the New York Islanders. He is a disciple of Head Coach Barry Trotz and his defensive system.
    5) When Coach Colliton handed the dry erase board the the players a line from one of my favorite movies “Cool Hand Luke” kept going through my head:
“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.”
    Cool Hand Colliton. No way.

    That’s all for now.

  • October 25, 2021 at 3:27 pm

MO, Good to have you back my friend. Unfortunately we are in the midst of a Stan Bowman created disaster and more Unfortunately Rocky Wirtz has all of his focus on getting out from under current litigation and the construction of damage control. So for now this means Bowman isn’t going anywhere and Colliton is going to be the short term fall guy. As I and others have said before , a massive culture and philosophical change is in order and it sure does not begin with young Danny Wirtz and his bevy of wokesters making hockey related decisions.

  • October 25, 2021 at 6:43 pm

Playball/Tim yea had a rough summer with my sisters kid dieing and I was in an ambulance three wks later said I looked pale. So put my head down and worked now I am moar to the point about things I think.

  • October 25, 2021 at 6:45 pm

Zambony, not saying we’re going to top 10 team this yr just that Hoss always said it takes a certain amount of games to get into a ? and I have noticed since 2009 that first five are the real preseason games.

  • October 25, 2021 at 6:50 pm

Dollar, think Roman said we would end up with about 2-4 1sts from trade line players which are low 1sts so none elites/prob. We get another top 5 draft pick on our own this yr and maybe next yr by way of lottery. So maybe only one next two drafts.

What happens when we donot have leaner flurry or amazing rookie beginner luck/which I believe in the rookie not saying he got lucky just that he hadn’t played a full two seasons yet so should be good for us for top 5 pick this time around. Then he can get good in his third full yr. For now Lank stay near .500 please and let back ups suck. That’s how.

  • October 25, 2021 at 6:52 pm

In the mean time get your shit together and go to Florida and get the money.

  • October 25, 2021 at 8:03 pm

Per Lazerus, Whoever said the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree got the Wirtz’s down pat!

“Lazarus, in today’s The Athletic, writes that rumors out there say that the lack of revenues due to Covid last season, and declining ticket sales this season, could stop Rocky / Danny from making a move on Bowman and Colliton, both with new extended contracts – declining revenues causing them to lock down on costs. Paying them off and hiring quality replacements might be too much money going out for the family to bear”

  • October 25, 2021 at 8:27 pm

@DollarBill: you’ve gotta love the irony. Stan’s bad contracts kneecap the team, and the Wirtz’s bad contracts hit them right back. Finally something about the current situation to enjoy.

  • October 25, 2021 at 8:41 pm

@jordyhawk: The irony will come full circle when come Thanksgiving they’ll have fewer
than 5,000 people in the seats.

They may go winless until they play Arizona Nov. 12th

  • October 25, 2021 at 9:05 pm

On my way to florida, Til May…….only way I watch the Hawks live is in Florida…

  • October 25, 2021 at 10:59 pm

The Blackhawk’s post on Facebook (yes, I actually still have an account) had a picture of Toews and a quote that kind of stated that the problems were all on the players.
One of those things that looks like a weird spin, trying to make people think one thing, based on a somewhat cliche’ quote from a team captain that is not going to throw coaching staffs of systems under the bus.

So thereby it looks like the Blackhawks organization, or media department, toss the players under a garbage truck.

Made about as much realistic sense as the Danny Wirtz tweet about inclusion and diversity in United Center seating.

This is just a sad state of affairs for an organization that rose up from great depths, but now is heading toward the Marianas Trench.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:00 pm

Dollar, We are targeting November 1st at home against Ottawa for our 1st lead in a game and then the win!!

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:16 pm

The last thing I want is for us to suck in all of these ways unless it’s what gets us more elites from draft because that is what it takes to be a top team. So careful what you wish for.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:35 pm

Dollar Bill thats interesting what you say about Lazerus and purse strings. Don’t know if he talked about this but with MAF 7m, Strome 3m, Shaw 3.9m, Dehaan 4.55m, Kubalik 3.7m, a buyout of Connelly clears another 2.33m, comes to about 24.5m coming off. Jones gets a 4.1m raise, Murphy .55m and Dach be in the 5m range raises be 10m or just under going on with Kubalik likely only other who may be brought back, depending if he is in plans for top 6 he may, be too steep for a 3rd liner. May need to bring in a goalie too if Lankinen and Soderblom don’t look the part while Comeesso hopefully develops. Wonder if they hold off next summer and stay a bit under cap or not.

Just one other point on capspace. T Johnson and MAF cost 12m this year and 5m next 2 in TJs hit. If you don’t make those moves Seabrooks 6.875m is there for 3 years and Suter who likely wasn’t signed because of Johnson trade has a 3.25m caphit next 2 years. That is really the only short term go for it grab moves, the rest on defence, Jones and new deals for McCabe , Murphy are long term committments that may choke the roster or may payoff, too soon to tell. First thing though this debacle to start this season has to be addressed somehow.

Welcome back Mo, sorry to hear you had a rough summer. WIJG missed your comnents and discussion too.

  • October 25, 2021 at 11:42 pm

In 2 years Kane, Toews and Debrincat contracts are up, right now they total 27.4m combined caphit. I wonder do their new deals cost more or less combined caphit and by how much ?

  • October 26, 2021 at 7:47 am

Ian- Toews will be retired in 2 years or less… IMO- doesn’t have the heart/drive anymore… continuously out muscled and out willed … guy is HOF legend- but don’t see him playing much longer.

Only way he plays- if He absolutely needs the money- or it is w/ top contender to win SC

If Lazerus is right- then Hawks should be looking to further dump guys at TDL- gonna get nothing for MAF and Dehaan- if Hawks are playing like this… gonna need to dump the likes of Dcat/Hagel/Kubalik- if they really want some high picks/prospects to save $$$ and build future.

Kane/Toews- expendable too… BUT – they would probably need to drive those deals

  • October 26, 2021 at 8:39 am

@Billy Reay, enjoy the Condo I bought you! And enjoy the weather for winter is coming.

  • October 26, 2021 at 8:39 am

Ian, I anticipate alot happening before those 3 contracts are up. A new G.M and coaching staff such as a Trotz or Brindamor type ,Lane Lambert, Kirk Muller, etc would most definitely move in a different direction size, speed and otherwise which could mean the end of all 3,s careers here. The only survivors of the pending purge would be Seth and Caleb Jones,Reichel, and Dach. The rest will be gone one way or the other.

  • October 26, 2021 at 8:44 am

@Tim W, I’m sticking w/Zona for first win, but getting first lead w/Ottawa is a good bet.

although something is telling me we lead against Toronto by like 4-1 w/10 minutes left and we lose in OT.

  • October 26, 2021 at 8:51 am

Ian, looking at cap friendly they are really up against it next year with Dach and Kubalik due decent raises and should Kubs pot in the 30 area he’s gone. Just another example of Stan’s lack of cap knowledge.

So far we have 12 players signed at $57 mil leaving $25 mil for Dach/Kub, 2 goalies and 2 D and 4 fowards.

Trading for Seth Jones was bad enough but signing him for $9.5mil was criminal.

  • October 26, 2021 at 11:16 am

Tim W the object is still to score more goals than the opposing team, don’t agree getting rid of hard to come by elite goal scorers is the answer, look at the interest they draw, 12 and 88 at least be extended, that is why Kubalik may stay around yet. Every team needs goal scorers and a goalie who can stop them. Unfortunately neither is happening right now for the Blackhawks. Agree need some of what you’re talking about in bigger faster players who handle the greasy areas as well. Think everybody agrees what saw last few years with smaller skilled , non physical play was too much of a good thing to be contenders. Nobody can predict what happens with Toews but he has a come alot farther than alot gave him any chance of doing, even if some still refuse to give the credit he deserves for it.

Forwards have alot of potential with work to do to make them complete, for sure. Defense could become a strength fairly quick, if as Tab pointed out in podcast, that Jones getting used to new teammates and learning this system was maybe given a regular partner each shift instead of a continual mixed bag of them. Goaltenders biggest questions to me, do Lankinen or Soderblom have high enough ceilings to rely on. Commesso obviously could be best of them all but too far away to assume anything about him yet.

  • October 26, 2021 at 12:01 pm

Ian- Regarding Kane extension… Kane/Injury- has his goal scoring- trending downwards Of course he is still elite passer- but if this is a Hip related issue– he may never be a “goal scorer” again.

Re Goalies- doesn’t matter who they pay to play goal… if Hawks keep playing this brand of Hockey- No goalies out there gonna help. Niemi won a cup here!

Build a team/system in front of any of the Hawk Prospect Goalies- and they can/will be successful

  • October 26, 2021 at 7:09 pm

I got got Tazers back and like I did this summer I see him doing the same to get back the whole way. I am not stopping just because I am not prime yrs anymore now. I am training harder now that I am back to 100% health. I expect no less from Johnny Wayne.
