Blackhawks Prospect Camp Preview: Goalies

In this third and final part of our series, we’ll look ahead at the goalies participating in this week’s Blackhawks prospect camp. We have already examined the forwards and defensemen that will be in attendance, now let’s shift our focus to between the pipes.

Brandon Whitney
6-5, 193
Drafted: 7th round (191st overall) in 2012

Whitney was a pleasant surprise when the Blackhawks selected him in the final round of this summer’s draft. He was the second ranked North American goalie heading into the draft but fell to the Hawks late after a solid season with Victoriaville of the QMJHL. Being that he’s barely 18, he’ll get plenty of time to develop.

Mac Carruth
6-4, 174
Drafted: 7th round (191st overall) in 2010

Yes, it would appear the Hawks like picking goalies at the 191st overall selection. Carruth had a fantastic season with Portland of the WHL, and led them on a deep playoff run for the second straight season. In the last two seasons, Carruth has played in 43 total postseason games (21 in 2011, 22 in 2012) and has posted save percentages of .919 and .918, respectively, in those two playoff tournaments. He has signed an entry-level deal with Chicago.

Kent Simpson
6-2, 190
Drafted: 2nd round (58th overall) in 2010

Simpson will battle Carruth for ice time in Rockford this year after signing an entry-level contract. He played in 113 games for Everett of the WHL over the last two season, including a .909 save percentage iin 60 appearances in 2011-12.

Johan Mattson, who was a 7th round pick in 2011, will sit out this week because of an injury. The 6-4, 192-pound netminder played in 37 games with Sudbury of the OHL last year.

Thanks for all of these updates Tab, we all appreciate your hard work and excellent efforts…have Saad, McNeil, Danault and this year’s 1st round pick all in camp is going to make for a lot of excitement…

Knowing McNeil a little bit, he is NOT going to want to play in the minors so he will be coming to camp to make the NHL roster…
