Blackhawks Prospect Wyatt Kaiser Named To NCHC All-Rookie Team

On Monday, University of Minnesota-Duluth freshman defenseman Wyatt Kaiser was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team.

Kaiser, a third round pick (#81 overall) by the Blackhawks in the 2020 NHL Draft, has been credited with nine assists in 23 games for the Bulldogs. He also ranked second among freshmen with 30 blocked shots this season.

Recently read a very positive article on Kaiser. He jumped directly from MN high school hockey to top pair d-man playing big minutes on a top college team which is pretty rare. The article raved about his skating, said he moves laterally as quick as some go north/south which allows very tight gap. Said he was like a top cornerback that completely blankets a receiver.

The 2020 draft is off to a very good start with Reichel’s success in Germany; Commesso, Slaggert and Kaiser all having strong years at top college programs and the 4th, 5th and 6th round players all playing for the Icehogs. Hopefully several of these guys ultimately make it to the show.

It seems like only yesterday the d-man prospect pool was pretty shallow, if not drained completely. We still have a ways to go but things are looking up. I would love for the Hawks to trade one of two of these young d-men from a position of organizational depth. Similar to what Carolina and Philadelphia has done over the past 6-7 years where they develop a young d-man and then trade him for a positional need with the backfill being another prospect ready to step into his place.
