Good move for the botton D pairing… Kempny is no more than a 5 or 6 defenseman… We need a top 4 to complete the core!
Now Stan trade away Kruger !

Kempny is ready to shoulder the burden. He played regularly during the Hawks’ best streaks of the season. This is a bargain. He has all the attributes of a top 4 D man. It will happen soon. This will be Bowman’s biggest bang for his buck.

I remain shaking my head at making Panik a multimillionaire based upon a one hit wonder season — on a cap burdened team. This isnt the NBA with a soft cap and taxes above. Every penny counts.

I’m glad he’s back. Kempny may never be more than a 5-6 defenseman, but after watching Campbell, Oduya and Seabrook bumble through the Nashville series, I’ll take him.

Need his presence on the blueline next year whether he reaches his potential as a top 4 Dman or not. Glad its done

Great 4-5 Dman for 900k. Panik at 2.8mm is risky but if he just maintains, it’s not a horrible deal.

I really think that Kempny will be a better dman next season ..he will become a number4 dman next season and after he will be looking for a 2-3 millions $ per year contract for 2-3 years…
We really need this guy now …but by the time the season start The Bowmans will make a big trade …probably 4-5 players involve …then we will have a good clue what kind of team they want to build…
I have a feeling that they will make a Splash with a big trade ….
    Just my 2 cents

I agree the Hawks need a #4 to play with Seabrook

Signing Kempny is an excellent move. He is a legitimate third pairing NHLer.
Q needs to play him 18 minutes a night every night. He might turn into a number 4

Stan needs to force this on Q. The only way to do that is have Forsling, Kempny, Rutta, Gustafson, Pokka at camp.

No Oduya or Campbell to fall back on.

Kempny- is a #3 D man on this team right now!!! So $900k is a steal!!!

Seabrook- a #3 D man??? Not even close!!! and a crippling Cap hit of $6.8M

Strategically, over the course of the season, Q should play Keith and Seabrook less to keep them fresher. They can no longer long the huge minutes and still be effetive. Q needs to be smart about this. Let Kempny be one of the d men who steps up and logs the big minutes. It’ll pay off as the season progresses and if we make the playoffs. In my opinion Q has ridden the core too hard and led to early burnout.

Your right Ernie. Condon probably looking for more than Bowman can offer Noonan like to Darling who had the same cap hit this year but maybe not as big a deal as Darling got. Reto Berra who looked impressive in an emergency stint with the Panthers might be an option to look at.

Its a good signing. Kempny should have played more against Nashville after it become obvious(after game 1 or 2 at the latest) that the old defenders couldn’t keep up with the Preds. Q on the clock. One more year of Q dressing the wrong players in the playoffs and he goes bye bye. People need to stop apologizing for Q’s playoff lineups and start calling him out on it.

    Well said Pete
Q needs to get on the program. With the current talent level on the Hawks barring major injuries they should be a playoff team. With that said Q’s regular season focus should be preparing for the playoffs. He should not skate the shit out of Keith or Seabrook. He should not have wasted games playing Rosy when that time should have been spent coaching up Kempny not stapling his ass to the bench every time he FU. It’s called coaching players up and adjusting to the talent you have.
If you think Tootoo, Mash, Desy and Rash are your playoff forwards then play them, if not keep the young guys out there learning. Q should be on a short lease this year. 2 first round exits is a trend that need breaking.

When you are at the nhl level its about winning and losing, teaching is done in the lower levels. Kempny sought and got a deal where instead of going to Rockford to have time to adjust he could go back to europe if he didn’t stay on nhl roster. Its the old be careful what you ask for because thats what he got.

Coach Q is not going make the same mistake twice. When ever hes had to do things in a more business and way he doesn’t like as much, he has. 2013 was like that after 11 and 12. Maybe Kaner goes to Switzerland for some vibes as well.

Hawks finish the year with 8 lost ….
There was something really wrong ….no motivation , not focus, not prepare to go to war ,and never react …hey Guys you lost not 4 not 6 …8 Games in a row to finish your year…..Fudge men …Shaw was missing to the Hawks this year but we had no choice and i was glad they had so much for him …( DCat should be a Nhl player in 2-3 years.) and Shaw is really to expensive at that price
Talking about Price who was rumoured a few time in Mtl a few months ago ..Craw was also mentioned in a few trade rumor…soon we will have the Junior repechage and 1 week before it start Price name will be said again and again …i am a Craw fan and hope we keep him here in Chicago.
I still think the kids we had last year where really giving the max for the experience level they had …off course i was disapointed about Motte. I hope that one more year with Rockford will help him and maybe . the new guys ( Noël , Highmore ,Fortin ,Dcat ,and a few others from EUROPE .maybe they will transformed Rockford…plus a new Coach in the perfect time with a lot of new blood …It is definitely a Major move for the Hawks. Rockford Will make the Playoff next year …90% .Love my Hawks all my life and forever . ;)
    Go Hawks Go

I think we lost the 4 in a row then won the Stanley Cup in 15. Who cares about those games. Losing last 4 games in playoffs is what is terrible.

We traded Darls, Crow isint going anywhere for a longtime.

Ian. Good point. When Trent Yawney was the coach he always harped on the fact that the NHL is not a developmental league.
However, the caveat is that the only way to get experience is to play.
Q overlooks TVRs turnovers and soft play in front of the net, but if Kempny did the same, he sat. Sitting a Kempny for 6 or more games consistently stunted his growth.

Craig N agree, Q has his pets, TVR is certainly one of them. Kempny will be a far better D man than TVR, whether in Chicago or elsewhere down the road. TVR s trade value will never be greater if he isnt exposed in expansion draft.

Morrison agree, Q usually gets it eventually. My only concern w/ Q is he is making @ least $5M per yr, he knows he can get another job making the same or more if things dont work out w/ Hawks, his stubborness may override his common sense based on the money.

The Hawks will have no excuses this year–after 2 longer summers. With Toews and Kane they need to stay in the conversation, can’t rebuild so we will see how they lead. Pittsburg has proven that you don’t need an amazing D-core with a Norris leader. What Pittsburg does have is two great centers and a scoring winger and the right mix of speed and grit. (They also have 2 really good goalies and the Hawks HAD that) Other than the second stud center Chicago has these ingredients already with more scoring potential and the ability to develop/find the grit and speed? They need to re-vamp their style of play system with smart coaching

The other team in the playoffs is showing the ‘newer’ model-youth and speed with a really mobile defense core. The Hawks don’t have that.
So both models can win it but do the key Hawks want it bad enough to be the leaders and best players on the ice? Time will tell but those that feel the window isn’t closing are IMO wrong. (There are some good young teams just ready to go)

I see D-Cat as another talented player (passing and shooting) but not a leader. With the right guys he can be a top 6 player who will get 60+ points a year. If he plays with a big winger who can crash with half decent hands, and a smart, talented center who can skate he will be successful in the NHL.

And as I said before they need (for the future) to draft and develop a couple of good d-men. This has been a glaring omission.

    Well- just finished watching M-Cup final… D-Cat versus Knott…

Good news – Knott played a really smart game, skates well for his size, and has SIZE.
Hands need to improve… but thought he anticipated and “read” the plays- very well- leading to a Couple of Grade A chances.

Bad news- D-Cat… looked pretty average- Versus one of the best D- teams from the OHL.

Knott – was pretty average at Hawks Prospect camp… but watching him here… Perhaps- he is- more cerebral player… and once he feels comfortable in the “system”- his reads- and his play will be much more noticeable… at least that’s what I am hoping for… After Camp- I thought Knott would be McNeill type of bust… But now- I really feel like Knott can play/skate much better… shot is weak… But does most everything else better than McNeill did- forechecks, skates, goes to the net, blocks shots, passes better than Mcneill

Good move…now play him from the start and enough of the healthy scratch crap, Q. I think he’s got the skills to be a solid #4 player. If there’s a few bumps & bruises along the way accept it and anticipate he’ll grow.

On a Finals note…how ironic is it that Trevor Daly couldn’t crack Q’s lineup but has played a key role over two seasons for the Pens as they’re likely to win a second Cup in a row?

I think I’ve seen the same thing Wall-Knott learns and adapts well and if he can skate enough he will eventually be a 6.4/6.5 210+ lb. bonus for the bottom 6 and perhaps be useful in front of the net in the power play.
D-Cat was held in check (but did get 10 points in 5 games) as were most of the team against Windsor. He will need to adjust big time to the NHL but has that release that few are born with. He is an above average passer and his skating will be OK but certainly not above average. Time will tell for the little guy.

Craig I here yeah on the mistakes are ok for some and not others with Q, but he and the coaches often say they will put up with mistakes if your trying to play the way they want you too. Meaning putting in the time to adjust to their system and play it right not perfect.

Panik is one of two hawks that will go to the front of the net. Anisimov is the other, and him being hurt down the stretch did not help-was on a roll before the injury. Agree, Campbell and Oduya are not what they were. But let’s face it- Nashville wants it this year and they are in the final and should have won game 1, so we got beat by better team. A faster team. When did the Hawks go from being a speedy team to old and slow?

Need tackle and go fast guys.
