Good move. Now showing or making our top four DMen. One spot left. Who goes out to try and get it? One of our young D or do we go out and get one.

Very pleased to see this signing. A major (positive) course correction in the past couple months. No longer relying on smaller d prospects to step up. Assuming McCabe returns to form our top 3 are very solid and we now have several d prospects with very good size as well.

I know Ebony doesn’t want to hear this but.
Connelly Strome Beaudin and Shaw’s $$ to Habs for Drouin and either Poehling or Guhle (don’t think we’ll get both) preferably Guhle.

Gives us I believe around $5mil to work with this year. Montreal can go the way Tampa goes.

Question for Ian. Can a team use some of their LTIR at the beginning of the season or once you’re over you are over.

Good signing and at a very reasonable rate

Murphy is a solid D man not a great point producer but a solid defensive D man – well worth that contract

    Meh-

Murphy seems like a hard working guy. OK – if he is your 4th D- I guess.

But when you compare to say- Oduya as a 4th D- You see the Hawks really ain’t hat good… In a perfect world- Murphy is your Rosey/Sopel 5th D type-

which makes him really overpaid- and only way Hawks are solid team- is if 2/3 Young/Cheap D guys- leap frog Murph and put him in that 5th D slot-

To Add- lots of Health issues with both Murph and McCabe (who seems like solid SB find- except for frequent injuries)

I’m not aware of any major health issues with Murphy – am I missing something?

All players especially D are gonna miss some time

I also think Murphy compares favourably with Johnny O – least based on the eye test I think he could have partnered with Hammer in the glory years and been as good as Oduya was there

Murphy is I think a bit underrated by Hawks fans because the teams in CHI while he’s been here have generally sucked

As well Oduya is probably a bit overrated because those teams were so good

Murphy IMO could have played 4th D on any of the Hawks Cup teams

This is a really good signing at that price.the best Dman in the last season is now a Hawks for 5 years .the Hawks really had the best in that trade and I expect Murphy to become a better Dman in the next 2-3 years .
This is a solid move and it will help Fleury think about the future in Chicago or another good goalie for the year 22-23 .
Hopefully they will leave the young kids play to get the last 2 spot this year .( Beaudin,Regula, Mitchell should play some games and be in the race )
Phillips, Vlasic , will probably play a few games for the Hawks but will continue to develop in Rockford.
I wish they Move DeHaan ,Strome ,Connolly and Shaw in the next months.

Nice signing. Locks in S.Jones, McCabe and Murphy for 4+ years. Are they as good as 2/4/7 of yesteryear – NO. But they are a solid foundation for a winning team and with Kalynuk and Mitchell coming up – that could be a very good top-5 in a year or two.

Stan is having a hell-a-good summer if you ask me. I haven’t gone back and looked at the moves made the last few summers but this summer seems to be at the top of the list.

You’re not done yet Stan – figure out what to do with Strome and/or deHaan.

re: Murphy being underrated – I added Murph’s card from JFresh. He’s a very good defenseman who many in Chicago take for granted. He’s grown into his role well since getting here and developed into a legit top-4 guy. At $4.4M per this is an outstanding value deal for the Blackhawks.

Now we’ll see a) who they pair with Murphy, b) what they do w/ deHaan, and c) how many defensemen they carry throughout the season. They still have too many bodies on the back end.

  • August 31, 2021 at 4:51 pm
    Permalink

As long as deHaan is playing for the Hawks he will probably be the 4th guy in the top-4 unless JC wants to spread out the veterans so the 3rd pairing isn’t two inexperienced like Kalynuk, Stillman, or C.Jones.

I’m hoping Kalynuk gets a chance to play on his natural left side to really give him the best chance to succeed. If deHaan is still on the team – play him on his off side at RD behind S.Jones and Murphy. If that happens then I’d probably pair up McCabe and S.Jones and Kalynuk with Murphy.

I was really happy at the time when the Hawks trade Hammer and I admit I was still a bit bitter because the offer sheet he had signed a few years earlier.
Bowman definitely had the best in that trade .
Their is a trade or 2 coming before season start ..Hawks have to many Dman .I think..Bergevin is still in love with Beaudin and will probably give it a try .
I would not trade Beaudin because I think he will become a top 4 with a lot of offensive skill. ( keep him in Rockford another full year )

    S. Jones 8 years, Murphy 5 years, McCabe 4 years, Stillman 3 years, Mitchell and Beaudin 2 years left on elcs, Kalynuk and C. Jones rfas next summer, appears blueline set for foreseeable future until pipeline sends more to Nhl. Through in Dehaan as veteran insurance next year, gotta like it.

  • August 31, 2021 at 8:45 pm

So Jones, McCabe and Murphy as the core on defense going forward. DeHaan stays because the Hawks are all in on making the playoffs and he is a legit #4 in this league.

No telling how this works out. I think Stillman will be fine as a 3rd pairing, 13 minute a night guy.

    McCabe SJones
    Stillman Murphy
    Kalynuk deHaan

Use CJones, Beaudin, Regula. Mitchell with deHaan and use them for rest days for everyone. Of course injuries will happen if it’s not SJones I’m not worried.

Okie- I like Murphy- my comment is really based on bigger picture/context.

    More about the Team picture/lineup/cap

    Hell, Murphy is a number 1 – $6M D man on a bad team

imo- he is #4 D at $4M on a really Good team

    and a $2-2.5M on a great team as a number 5/6 D guy

That is my Context/reality- so based on this Team’s D weaknesses over past few years- Hawks better find some guys to Leap frog him OR SB needs to do some work- to quickly build this team into a “Really Good team”.

I am excited about this year- and Hawks are surely better than last- I think the Hawks will surprise and be a Good team- Just not a REALLY good team.

I hope they prove me wrong
I hope Reichel (who I love) can contribute this year
I hope Borgstrom and Gaudette- who I loved in NCAA- blossom
I hope Toews- year off- helped
I hope SB finds another “Hossa”/Panarin UFA type deal ( Barzal?)

2 or 3 of the above- need to happen to make the Hawks Legit

Lotta Hopes!!! To Make Hawks a Really good team.
    But I am excited

Agree that Getting Murphy at this price is a steal ,I was hoping the Hawks would sign him at around 5 millions/ year and when I saw the deal I was thinking that some players are playing for their team and they are less for the money .getting him at this price give the Hawks 1/2 million more to sign another player that will maybe make the team better . Murphy is a top 4 on 27-28 teams in the league .
Hagel at 1.5 m$ was also a steal I think …most team would take Hagel at 2.5 or more anytime because players like Hagel are rare and today Buffalo is really asking ** why did we let him go ..WHY ? And they Cry
Hagel was another very good move by Bowman .excellent timing .

There’s probably too much focus put on whether a d-man is a #2 or is he a #3, or this other d-man – is he a #4 or a #5? All the d-men work in two man units within the larger 6 man d-corps so there’s a lot of variables at play which affect individual play. That said, I think Jones is a legit 1/2 top pairing guy and Murphy, McCabe and deHaan are not. Someone will need to play on the top pair with Jones but the Hawks don’t have a Werenski to play with him. They don’t have a second legit top pairing guy – Murphy, McCabe and deHaan are what they are and they’re not legit top pairing d-men.

The only guy on the Hawks who has a shot to be that this coming season is Kalynuk but with only 21 NHL games under his belt that is a whole lot or projection without much supporting evidence. Since most of the time he was playing his off side and he still looked pretty good – I’m hopeful he can look even better if he’s given the chance to play on his natural left side which would work perfect playing with Jones. Probably not at the start of the season, but by the end of the season I hope to see Kalynuk-Jones as the top pair.

Stan overpaid for Seth Jones, overpaid somewhat for Jake McCabe then got Murphy for a bargain. Go figure.

Ebony Raptor right you are on Kalynuk. The Hawks a really high on him. He’s definitely the front runner to be in the top 6 over Mitchell and Beaudin.

couldn’t agree with you more on murphy. third d-man pairing on any of the cup winning teams. your cap hit for him in that role is not unrealistic. however, i wouldn’t be upset paying him more because he can fill in when necessary with the first pairing or second pairing role and hold his own. can kill penalties as well. so better than just a 12/13 minute a game space filling third pairing guy. much more valuable than a sopel type. he wasn’t the type of guy to move up in the pairings when injuries would occur.

excited for the season as well. really hoping at least one of gaudette, borgstrom, and nylander find their way although not holding out much hope for nylander. also for hagel and kurashev to find a way to put points on the board worthy of a third liner.

  • September 1, 2021 at 5:05 pm
    Permalink

HAWKS29 like your potential lines of Borgstrom Gaudette Nylander in a prove yourself role and lots of ready bodies if they don’t. Hagel T. Johnson Kurashev as 3rd, a motivated Reichel with Toews Kubalik leaving Cat Dach Kane. Still think Bowman wants be under cap opening day before placing Shaw on ltir, so Strome and Connelly make it happen in a trade and bury or moved as package with retained salary on both. With potential 3-4 Cs in Gaudette, Khaira, Borgstrom, Carpenter, Kurashev and Entwistle, that just makes Strome too expendable it seems.

Wrap, yea I see Murf like Hammer or Oduya they were at 4 m area and good 2nd pair Defensemen. Hammer was much more then that.

You do not see top players in league on same team very often d we had that with three FWs and three D.

    19 88 81 and 2 7 4.

That’s why it takes to have a dynasty in the salary cap era. And I mean no bookends or corona length and format stuff. Real dynasty’s.

    Reichel/Toews/Kubalik
would be interesting- Reichel has Great IQ and is shifty/quick

I think he would hound pucks/fore check -like Hagel- and create a Lot of chances for 19 And Kubalik… and keep lots of plays a live for the Old Capt.

Like someone said Bowman is making the moves Tim said to a complete revamp of the small sized and team playing weak except when Gilbert and Zad set the tone then team played shy away. Bowman making the correct adjustments from that style while keeping the skilled players who can take it like 12 and adding hardnosers across the board.

When ready team system is part of this adjustment.

Prob not the thread to praise Hammer though Hammer was the terminator and just got used up in 10 yrs. Murf isi t as good though he’s better now he’s good 2nd pair D guy and Hammer is retired at 30. So we got good return for the core players retired or moves we needed to do at the time.

Full circle in a couple yrs.

This contract is surprising. On another site a few weeks ago, the discussion revolved around the fact that Murphy would probably demand at least $5 mil per year for 5 years. There were pros and cons to it. The fact that he took $4.4 and only wants 4 years is hard to grasp. Does he believe that Jones is worth twice the money that he is?

This is really good news for the Hawks but Murphy needs a new agent. Maybe he doesn’t have one and negotiated this himself. He has been a very good player and is only going to be making about $1 million more than Pius Suter. It was apparently worth something to him to get it done now and not have to wait a year. Still……..

It appears Montreal and Bowman lieutenant Marc Bergevin are not going to match the offer sheet for Jasperi KK. The talk on NHL Network is that the Canadiens will try to move the #1 pick to try to get a Center.
Not sure what Bergevin thinks of Dylan Strome but if he were to offer Stan a 2nd and 4th rounder, I think you’d have a deal.

Murphy is a good signing. A good player at a fair price.

This by no means changes my oppinion of Bowman. The 4 horsemen are finished even before they left the stable, 5 1st and 2nd draft picks. He over paid for McCabe and Jones. SB continues to piss away time, prospects and financial equity as he tries to fix his mistakes. The Hawks organization continues to be unable to develop blue line talent.

Remember how much time and effort SB used to shore up the blueline as the offense goes to pot when Kane slows down.

These are my D pairings for this year:

    Kalynuk – SJones
    McCabe – Murphy
    Stillman – deHaan
    Beaudin – Mitchell (Rfd)
    CJones – Regula (Rfd)
    Phillips – Vlasic (Rfd)

Looks like Rockford is stacked too – don’t forget about Chad Krys, that kid is a good player!
