…I guess my dream of Suter on the Hawks was just that.

OMG. You really expected Suter here???? Under what cap?

A cheap replacement for Hjalmarsson, good depth move!Relax about Suter as nothing will probably happen today!

…if the rumored asking price (for Suter) McGuire and others were throwing around are even close nothing will happen with the Hawks any day. If you get locked into $7 million for 6, 7, 8… years how do you pay Leddy and other players when their contracts end? To me, Brookbank looks like a replacement for O’Donnell and Lopisto. He’ll add hitting no doubt, but no offense and probably some mistakes and bad penalties.

Hopefully, Bowman is working some other moves.

I have been trying to find out why Brookbank only played a limited number of games up until this past season?Either he has been injury hampered or just a late bloomer from what I can find?Anyone know why he has seen limited action up until last year?He blocks less shots than Hjalmarsson but definately hits alot more!

1.25 million a year for two ?I don’t see the need for another right winger no matter how much we can like Mueller.

Mueller can play center! Not a chance in hell Ollie signs that cheap!

How could you live with Bouwmeesters contract?2 years at 6.3ish?Personally beyond Suter thats what teams might as well look at!Maybe get a goalie?Or pony up on a short insane contract and hope potential comes back.Very tough decisions.I think trading is Stans’ best shot!

I’m having doubts bowman pulls anything off. I really want suter but the numbers being thrown around are insane 10;yrs 80 mill unbelievable no way hawks can compete with that! They still have work to do 2# center and a top 4 dman! (Dump hammerless)

brookbank is a guy that gets better at his position every year. he plays with heart and will stand up for his teammates anytime. he can also put minutes on the penalty kill. beautiful choice

I’m a patient person who happens to think that the deals that can be made now,are very, very expensive! If Evander is in play, than buy!Actually I don’t think that we have to do much on O, but lets shore up the D.I would be happy with Brodeur and our pipeline of talent. But then again I would love to see Stan unload some of it for a real upgrade.

  • July 1, 2012 at 8:42 pm
    Permalink

What type of realistic deal would it take to get Evander Kane. He seems to me to be a player that changes the nature of this team. Same for Bernier or Bishop…what would it take to get either? I’d like to see a better 2 Goalie competition than Emery. I believe(hope) Craw will show himself to be a solid goalie next year and the long term #1 solution. But if he doesn’t, I’d sure like to see his competition be a guy who CAN be that #1 solution.

I guess I’m saying a trade seems to be Stan’s best move.

And frankly, while i dont know crap about Brookbank, I think ANY $1-2m free agent signing for this team is a mistake, based on the makeup of this team and depth of minor league talent. The last thing we need is a 5th-7th D that stunts the growth of Olsen. Same for a bottom 6 forward that stunts Hayes, Saad, Pirri, Ben Smith, whoever. we need to leave a couple roster spots to let these guys develop in the big league.

  • July 1, 2012 at 9:00 pm

These are the Hawks holes or shortcomings (not listed in order of priority):
    1. Long term #1 goalie solution. (not saying that isn’t Craw, but need a PLAN in case he’s not the answer).
    2. One tough, physical skill player for top 6. Maybe that’s a C, or a left wing and move Kane/Sharp or someone to that #2 C. But has to be a tough guy to win battles androvide a bit of protection to our smaller guys in top 6.
    3. A different makeup for our defensive mix. A little more physical/hitting, some help at the point of PP, and some physicality to move players for. The net on PK. While I like Oduya, and at his salary, he didn’t solve the “mix” issue on the D. Therefore, we need to trade one of Hammer or Monty (or both) and change this “mix”. That doesn’t have to be a $6-7m guy (Suter). Can be a $3-4m guy, where you’re just trading out salary for salary but getting a different D mix than current.

In my humble opinion, what we DON’T need is to fill in the bottom of the roster. Do that with our youth. Examples: any real difference between using Olsen as 6th D, versus ODonnell or Lepisto? And letdown using Shaw and Bollig versus Brunette or Morrison? Let a couple of our youngsters develop at the bottom of our NHL roster instead of I. Rockford.

Scott,,,They say Nash will command a roster player,1a,1b prospects and a first round pick.We can afford him if he really wants to move. And we don’t have to sale the farm!

Get Doan and Broduer, trade hammer and Montador.Emery and Frolik also.Saad Shawzy and Olsen stay up.But GET Marty first.Hes interested in our Hockey Club and he can show Crowdaddy Hutton and Carruth why he’s the best of our generation. He could influence our whole netminder group for the future.3 or 4 etc proteges in our system of the GREAT Mar’tin Brodeur. It’s almost too good to be a possibility

I hoped Stan would land Greg Zanon. But Brookbank?? seriously? I can’t believe he actually signed this dude from Anaheim with no hockey smarts, bad positioning etc. he’s even worse than Monty! TO state the obvious, Stan has no plan as to how to improve our team. However, I’m glad he didn’t do what the canuckleheads just did, signing a one-dimensional d-man long-term for big bucks.. the fact that the cannots mortgaged their future made my day. garrison is a one-“hit” wonder courtesy of brian campbell!

The Blackhawks were never in on Olli Jokinen. He’ll sign somewhere else. The Blackhawks expressed zero interest in him, and were never considering him an option. So we can stop bringing his name up.

Tab, please tell me Bowman is not done. And I don’t mean Broke-bank type signings…

is there any hope of “impact” signing or trade?

    1st round exit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • July 2, 2012 at 11:48 am
    Permalink

What “impact” free agent is out there that’s a realistic target for the Hawks? This is a soft free agent class.

However, with that in mind, the lack of quality defensemen on the market should only serve to help the Hawks get better value when they move Hjalmarsson, which is where we could see the roster improved for the 2012-13 season.

Hawks fans also need to keep in mind that the organization anticipates some prospects matriculating onto the NHL roster at some point, and making an impact when they get there. If the front office and/or coaching staff views Brandon Saad as a top-six LW, the Hawks wouldn’t go shopping for one and overpay to meet the market and land a guy.

There are a number of variables in play. Saying the Hawks are a 1st round exit after 24 hours of free agency is a little impulsive, no?

    Tab,
You typically temper my frustration. I think you lay out the points well of why Stan and the Hawks don’t overspend on marginal talent. Up against the cap, don’t want to get locked in long term, yadda, yadda, yadda. I actually think the Brookbank signing isn’t a bad one…kind of Sopel esque in that he is a D-man who can give you probably 10-12 regular shift minutes a game plus play short handed.

Do you see it as somewhat of a problem that Stan doesn’t go and sign what we consider a more reliable player at what appears for the going rate? (Forget the Monty signing). While I agree that other teams seem to be overpaying to get good talent, they are getting good talent while the Hawks fill their gaps (which are big gaps) with cheaper signings that come with a big chunk of hope?

Also, are the Hawks already setting up their cap in a few years for the Towes signing…which is going to be big.

Yes Dale, we do miss you, immensely. The Hawks were just a little too quick when they pulled the trigger on such an excellent person and one hell of a GM! The season hasn’t even started yet and already I am only cautiously optimistic about this season to come.
For everyone’s sake and sanity I sincerely hope I am wrong.

To take a lesson out of Tab’s book, I don’t think value can be determined in the abstract. It might be overpay to, say, get Suter for what other teams like the Red Wings are offering. But, first, we keep the Red Wings from getting better and, second, Suter may improve are team far more than what a simple estimation of his value based on his raw production would indicate. In other words, it might be a good deal to overpay for Suter.

  • July 2, 2012 at 5:38 pm
    Permalink

Sign SUTER 75 mill over 10 years pay the piper up front Write out contract for 15 yrs @ 80 mill . last 5 @ 1mill each he may retire after 10 you save 10 Hawks win CUPS we get happy [ER] Let`s think long term 3/5 years. Toews needs 8+we could trade a Norris trophy winner for huge return and team needs in 2/3 yrs. Mc Neil gets 3rd line job in 2 years He May graduate to 2nd line, Saad plays LW this year on job training [someone mentioned] Jury still out on Prri. Olsen is keeper on NHL line or splits w/ AHL. Leddy need more $. Teuvo T. might replace Kane huge return and so on. Right now is the time to sign a foundation piece in Suter, stretch out years lower hit and insure contract if need be but SIGN THE GUY it`s about how many foundation pieces you can afford and the pipeline. Suter is a solid PROVEN commodity not a big risk. This is why Nash IS NOT good for this team, 7.8 HIT for too long I would like to see maybe Mueller for cheap or Brad Winchester and 1 more grit guy that can handle F/Os. Brookbank hits and fights good deal there, def. skills? I do not know. I agree we need maybe Bernier to get more competion going in goal. Let`s give Bowmen a chance He can pick out talant let`s hope he can assemble it like pa Bowmen.

Most fans were talking about Suter and Doan before Free Agency started. I for one would be fine with Brookbank and Parise. If the Reports from Jesse Rodgers and Chris Kuc are legit the Blackhawks are in on Parise and that would be a huge get.
