UPDATE: Patrick Sharp Hurt, Brandon Pirri Recalled

Patrick Sharp is OUT for the Hawks home opener

In late breaking and unexpected news on Saturday afternoon, the Blackhawks have called Brandon Pirri up from Rockford to replace Patrick Sharp in the lineup for Opening Night. This news was broken on RPI’s athletic web site, and confirmed through sources in Rockford.

UPDATE: Joel Quenneville told the Chicago media before Saturday night’s game that Sharp had a minor upper-body injury and should return soon. There has been no disclosure of what was wrong with Sharp, when it happened, or when he’ll return.

The fact that Pirri was recalled is intriguing. The Hawks have NHL veteran Ryan Potulny in Rockford after clearing waivers, but the paperwork to get him back to Chicago would take too long for Opening Night. The Hawks also have Kyle Beach, who has played center, available but likely prefer a natural center to play against Detroit.

Pirri is 19.
