Canada Hammers Austria

Toews blackJonathan Toews had one assist and took a team-high 18 faceoffs (winning 10) as Canada blew out Austria 6-0 on Friday evening in Sochi.

Jeff Carter had a natural hat trick in the second period to lead the scoring parade. The Canadian onslaught also included goals from Shea Weber, Drew Doughty and Ryan Getzlaf, who scored a short-handed goal after Carter’s third in the second period. Patrick Marleau was credited with three assists in the game.

Duncan Keith was the only Canadian to log over 20 minutes on the ice, totaling 23:52 in the game. Patrick Sharp was a healthy scratch; he was replaced in the lineup by Colorado’s Matt Duchene. PK Subban made his Olympic debut as Dan Hamhuis was scratched as well.

Roberto Luongo stopped all 23 shots for the shutout victory.
