Carpenter, Beaudin Added To COVID-19 Protocol List

The Chicago Blackhawks cancelled their morning skate on Saturday “out of an abundance of caution due to potential exposure of COVID-19.” It turns out they’re going to be without a couple more players.

Veteran forward Ryan Carpenter and rookie defenseman Nicolas Beaudin were added to the COVID-19 Protocol list on Saturday afternoon.

Chicago was already without forwards Alex DeBrincat and Lucas Wallmark and defenseman Adam Boqvist, meaning five Blackhawks are now on the list.

We may be nearing a breaking point at which time the Hawks will need to join the list of clubs that have needed to reschedule games as the entire team takes a break.

What is “the breaking point”? Is there something official like X number of players – how does that work?

I wonder who is patient zero with this outbreak – maybe Dcat or Boq but it sorta seems like one of the staff?

Anyway rescheduling games would be good for the Hawks to get some players back

This is exactly what the Taxi Squad is for. Highmore would seemingly slide in for Carpenter and Kalynuk for Beaudin.

The scary thing of course is that if Beaudin and/or Carpenter have COVID, both played last night and were breathing all over everybody on the bench. Unavoidable.

One guy in our Rec League had it, did not know he had Covid, and sneezed like 4 times in the dressing room. Not surprisingly a bunch of guys then got it.

    It’s a virus and it’s airborne. Scary.

Craig, that is what I was thinking after the 1st round of COVID removals. With the close proximity of being on the bench and in the small locker rooms, shouldn’t it be expected that everyone on the team, including coaches and staff, will eventually test positive?

Do we know whether all the people in protocol are positive? Or is it a safety measure? The Hawks have 5 players out, two who will be back in about a week.

Agree that this is what the taxi squad is for. Hopefully, having 5 players out won’t result in any game cancellations.

Foley and Olczyk were talking the other night about all the things that are being done to keep players from getting this virus. These protocols are strict – but they aren’t working. These players are living in a semi-bubble and still come down with it. I guess society is going to have to make some decisions. Do you accept that a lot of people are going to test positive and live with that or do you shut down when people get it? It seems like people get it, even with shutdowns.

Let me change the subject for a moment since all this COVID stuff gives me a headache,I’m with you Bob,but I digress,Sam Bennett is requesting a trade from Calgary.Hawks need a center or 2,go get him please. He centers Hagel and Kurashev and you have yourself a line.

Got a bit of information tonight. Stan and company are hoping to acquire a second
1st round pick in this draft. They already know they are going to be sellers at the trade deadline.
So a top 7 pick at the top of the first round and a pick in the late 20s would be sweet.

And we trade who to Calgary ?
Easy to say but at what cost ?
No kids to give away except maybe Nylander

That’s my kind of plan Craig. Move a de Haan and keep some cash, and get a 1st in return. Sweeten as necessary. Be nice to get 16-24 type pick, but that would be optimistic. Nice to be sellers for once.

Sam Bennett sux. He scored 36 points in his rookie year (2015/16) and since then has scored 26, 26, 27 until he tailed off to 12 points last season in 52 games. So far this season he has 1 assist in 6 games. He is what he is – a 25-30 point winger. He’s got good size and will mix it up but he’s not fast and he’s not offensively gifted. He would quickly rise to the top of the hate list on this and other Hawks message boards. I would take Strome over Bennett 10 times out of 10.

@craig nigrelli..I’m not surprised by the news that the Hawks are looking to add another first rounder..I think they’ll look to retain a mil in salary and trade DeHaan + Carpenter or DeHaan + Janmark to a playoff team looking for some size and depth..similar to how Stan traded for Wiese and Fleischmann to beef up the bottom six in 2016..another combination could also be DeHaan+ Shaw while retaining a mil for each player..either way, I see a defenseman and a winger with some grit getting moved and hopefully they’re moved together so the return is better. Let’s hope a team like Montreal wants to load up..they have a ton of tantalizing mid round picks. It would be awesome to get some of the prospect/pick equity back we lost in the Danault for Wiese/Fleischmann trade.

@ebonyraptor..first, congrats on your retirement! Second, I agree regarding Bennett..a first round pick who has progressively gotten worse over the last few years..essentially a fourth liner who throws his body around but doesn’t score, doesn’t maintain possession of the puck, and can’t win faceoffs but would need a qualifying offer near 3 mil next year..no thanks..give me Barratt or Entwistle on the fourth line at $850,000 instead.

My — impression – (not knowledge) – is that the Covid “protocol” applies to anyone who actually tests positive as well as anyone who gets named via contact tracing as having been in close contact with a person who tests positive. Does anyone know if my impression is correct? Seems that a few days and some repeat negative tests would have player back comparatively quickly vs. a positive?

This was on SecondCityHockey as far as defining what causes a player to be placed in Covid protocol. Numbers 2 and 3 appear to be safety measures. “Symptomatic” is really a broad definition because people have symptoms all the time, especially those with allergies.

    – an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed
    – mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals
    – required quarantine as a high-risk close contact
    – isolation based on confirmed positive test result.

It is possible that none of the 5 Hawks are positive. It is possible that all 5 are positive. We don’t need to know but it is good to know the contents of the protocol.

First, thanks to all well wishers re: retirement.

Lazerus/Powers reporting Hawks are practicing this morning which is a positive sign the game hasn’t been cancelled (yet). Also Highmore back in lineup and Reese Johnson making his NHL debut. Guess we’re back to 12F/6D. Lankinen in net.

My take on Reese Johnson from the one game I watched him play in Feb-2020. He is very quick and smart and hard-working. Not overly creative, but very responsible in his end. He is a very nice player, but not top 6. Think Krueger, but more offensively oriented.

BTW – I love Sam Bennett. He needs a change of scenery! He is like the 4th wheel in Calgary.

Reese Johnson was a beast on fos on juniors, Brent Sutter his junior coach had nothing but good things to say about him, saying he is gritty greasy kind of player every teams needs and will definitely be an Nhler. Been a late bloomer at all levels and is a very good player when he adapts. So looking forward to see if he can do it in nhl good luck to him.

Previous post shoulda said 6d not 7. Good to see no more added covid list, thought maybe flood gates were open yesterday at first. Hope all are well and back soon.

You don’t give up anything for Bennett.
    Congrats ebony.
De hann with retention doesn’t give us a first round pick. Hope for a second in best case scenario.
Guys that can get you a first are strome or Murphy.

Janmark if he continues the offense is probably a second round pick.
    Soderberg mid round value.
Carpenter or Kampf probably mid round but still have to take the expansion draft in consideration.
Shaw could be a dark horse trade candidate depending on health but still need vets around the kids.

MRFERNN 92, pretty much agree but i loke Shaws example to the young players, to me he is a leader by how he plays, no rush to move him at all. Think another possibility for mid rounder is a goalie and maybe Carlsson.

Lankinen in 5 starts has a .930 sv % while in 2 starts Subban is .886 sv% and Delia in 2 starts is .869, sv %. Lankinen off to quick start hopefully he can maintain it.

If DaHaan + Nylander got you a first I would take that but DeHaan on his own I agree doesn’t get you a first

Shaw should be a definite trade candidate but not sure if he’s tradeable – if he is it would almost certainly be with $ retained

Maybe DeHaan + Shaw + $ retained could net you a low 1st rounder?

Glad to see JC is riding with Lankster

    @Ian

    Agreed about Shaw.
As far as the goalies Subban and Delia probably zero value trade wise. If one was waived maybe they get claimed. Might as well stay status quo with all 3 for now.
    Lankinen deserved starter.

    @Wrap

If you could get a first for them two it’s a easy deal for the hawks to accept.
Only have one more retention slot. Think Shaw stays and mentors the young fellas with Kane

    @Ian

Carlsson is interesting if the hawks see no future for him here he’s more of a swap type of guy for another player.

  • January 31, 2021 at 2:23 pm

Wrap, Nylander on ltir he isn’t going anywhere until off season. The Blackhawks can retain one half of 1 salary max thos year with 2 on the booms already. So probably no chance any teams who buyers at tdl and most likely cap strapped , needing to get creative in offseaon again to get under cap, would take either of Shaw or Dehaans full caphit or part of caphit on the books next year for a 1st round pick. This flat cap era expiring contracts are going to be in demand and both Shaw and Dehaan more likely next years?tdl candidates or at draft if right deal falls in Bowans lap.

Agree Carlsson could be that type of move for sure.
