On Thursday, the Blackhawks announced that the organization has hired Derek King as an assistant coach with the Rockford IceHogs.

King, 49, has worked as assistant and associate coach with the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate, from 2009-15. While with the Marlies, King coached Spencer Abbott and Sam Carrick, who signed with the Blackhawks this summer.

He played in the NHL for 14 years, most recently with the 1999-2000 St. Louis Blues – where he was coached by Joel Quenneville.
