Detroit’s Brendan Smith Suspended 5 Regular Season Games

For his hit on Blackhawks forward Ben Smith on Wednesday night, Detroit prospect Brendan Smith has been suspended for the rest of the preseason plus five regular season games.

If/When he is demoted back to Grand Rapids, the suspension will be put on hold.  According to the AHL’s by-laws, a player who is under suspension in  another league or organization who seeks to play in the AHL while under  that suspension will have the relevant disciplinary matter independently  reviewed by David Andrews, President of the American Hockey League, who may in his  discretion deem the player ineligible.

On Thursday, Andrews ruled on two minor-league players that were suspended by the NHL for illegal hits. Anaheim Ducks forward Jean-Francois Jacques has been ruled ineligible to play in the AHL until October  15, 2011, and Philadelphia Flyers forward Tom Sestito has been ruled ineligible to play in the AHL until  October 9, 2011.
