Hossa, Handzus Head Home

Hossa

On Tuesday, the first four games of the medal tournament at the 2014 Winter Olympics were contested and two Blackhawks saw their Olympics come to an end.

  • Slovenia defeated Austria 4-0.
  • Russia defeated Norway 4-0.
  • Latvia upset Switzerland 3-1.
  • And the Czech Republic defeated Slovakia 5-3.

For Slovakia, Marian Hossa scored the first goal by a Blackhawks player at the Winter Games, and added his second of the tournament in the third period. Michal Handzus won 16 of 28 faceoffs in 21:19, but they will head back to Chicago first among the 10 Blackhawks in Sochi.

Michal Rozsival skated 13:23 in the victory. The Czech Republic will face the United States in the next round of the tournament. That game, which starts at 11 AM CT, will (fittingly) be on the USA Network.

The schedule for games on Wednesday:

  • Sweden vs. Slovenia – 2 AM CT – NBC SportsNet
  • Russia vs. Finland – 6:30 AM CT – NBC SportsNet
  • USA vs. Czech Republic – 11 AM CT – USA
  • Canada vs. Latvia – 11 AM CT – MSNBC

Rest for Hossa isn’t the worst thing in the world.

When Slovakia was down 4-3, Hossa was playing like a man possessed. He most likely got hooked which was uncalled, but controlled the puck in the Czech zone repeatedly by himself for 8 – 10 second intervals. He really wanted to win that game. Great determination…but know he can rest and hopefully do that for the Hawks come playoff time.

Wow, two 20+ minute games for Handzus. He needs the rest.

I don’t really care about any of it. However, if there is a God in heaven, those thugs, Rudolov and Ovechkin will lose to Finland tomorrow. Rudolov with a gold metal, that is reason enough to change the Olympic format

Down to 8 teams – the stage just got bigger. Usually the bigger the game the more Kane raises his game. Let’s hope so because he has not been all that impressive in the first 3 games.

I had hoped Sharp would stay with Toews but I really like Marleau-Toews-Carter.

Keith isn’t scoring like Weber and Daughty but he is playing some stellar defense.

Betcha Canada is happy Latvia took out the Swiss.

    I love Olympic hockey.

I think Kane is playing phenomenal and is being screwed by skating around with Dustin Brown. It’s funny, you wouldn’t know Dustin Brown is his linemate because he’s never involved in the play. But really, who knew Dustin Brown was an offensive black hole? (everybody) 1 primary assist this year in 5 on 5 play.

USA could have had Ryan-Palvalski-Kane, but they needed a captain. How does Brown live with himself.
