Jonathan Toews Named Alternate Captain For World Cup Of Hockey

On Thursday, Hockey Canada once again named Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby the captain to represent his country – this time at the World Cup of Hockey.

Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews and Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber (which still feels/looks weird) were named alternate captains.

The tournament will take place in September, and will happen without Hawks defenseman Duncan Keith.

Crosby deserves the C coming off a cup win. Shea Weber is the other Alt Capt. I forgot Crow was also selected I remember he was in the running but forgot he ended up making it. Good for Crow!

We all know who The Captain is.

Hawkhead- It will sure be a big deal for Toronto. Tickets will be insane prices. It’s good conditioning for our guys and should be more competitive than training camp. Actually, I got nothing…big marketing play by the NHL to attract Millennials, generate buzz and make moola. Give the ratings a boost for the start of the season. This thing will be huge across Canada but not so sure about Stateside.

I am firmly against our players participating in this stupid tournament. This was supposed to be the first long summer off for Blackhawks players in a long time. with numerous deep playoff runs, SC finals, Olympics, etc. etc., we’ve put a lot of extra miles on our best horses. Shouldn’t be doing this. Mining Man correct, no one cares Stateside. Wonder if Wirtz, McDonough, Bowmans pushed back on this at all

Our guys don’t need conditioning. They need rest. Toews and company have played more hockey than anyone on the planet. 10 of our players……..including Hossa. I don’t like this and I don’t give a crap about the tourney.
They should limit the players to 25 and under. That would make it interesting.

I think it should be okay. Kane had one of his better seasons when he played in Switzerland during the lock out. They won the cup in 2010, and that was an Olympic year. They were one bad bounce away from another cup in 2014, and that was an Olympic year. I think those mid season high pressure games were good for them. I think this tournament at the beginning of the year might help them start strong. They get to play a game that means something rather than wait the next 60 plus games to play some meaningful hockey

HawkHead= See “Nick” above…feel a bit better? ….lets hope none of our guys get hurt in any meaningful way.

I may be in the minority but I like the tournaments more than regular season games. Why? A. The skill level is way better. If you like hockey you want to see it played at a high level. B. It actually means something. A bunch of guys playing for a city that they aren’t from means way less than playing for your country.

At least we have Keith out … come Hossa didmt let a young kid play at his place …why not refuse to play and get some time for him to rest with his family …?
Nobody care about the world cup ..
Next world cup you will have team Canada ,team Usa,team north america , team eastAmerica ,team westAmerica, team centerAmerica, team everywhereAmerica…..#+£{%?&;@4^¥= team cash$$$$$$ ….
Hawks dont need that ….Hawks need more time to rest and relax …

PL, yes I believe you are in the minority. Sure players love their countries and take pride in playing for them. But as for the rest, I don’t think so.

The Stanley Cup is every hockey players’ dream above all else. Players, particularly star players, love the cities they play for because of the money and notoriety, but above all else, The Fans. If it were all about the city they came from, Toews would be a Winnipeg Jet.

Nick, remember in 2010 Kane was 6 years younger. As for playing during the Lockout…..The NHL season was only 48 games instead of 82.

H2010: AGREED, Hossa should not be in this tourney at all. Anisimov should not be playing either. If this tournament causes any of our players to miss time during the season…….. ugh.

does any of the revenue this tourney go into the salary cap configuration? cap strapped teams would benefit if it did.

  • August 26, 2016 at 10:07 am

I see what you mean Mike but I gotta think that Ovechkin, Panarin and Anisimov are going to get more excited about playing for mother Russia than for Washington or Chicago, particularly early season NHL. Now when it comes to the Stanley Cup, probably a different story. That’s why guys like Toews, Hossa, Crosby are playing this tournament. Best on best, fun to play, fun to watch.

Even though we still have had the longer summer of 4mths, this is what 2wks diff. Its better that this is when we have had 4mths then on anyother summer yr.

  • August 29, 2016 at 6:41 pm

I can see some big Russian that nobody has ever seen or will afterward lining up Toews along the boards and in the blink of an eye the Hawks are screwed. Boys ”One Goal” means Stanley Cup not World Cup. Keith is the smartest guy on the team, and what the hell is Hossa out to prove?
