NHL Attaches Sponsors To Division Names

Remember when the four NHL divisions were the Smythe, Norris, Patrick and Adams?

Now, they’re the… Honda, Mass Mutual, Scotia and Discover.

Yes, seriously.

On Tuesday morning the NHL announced sponsor partners for the four realigned divisions during the 2021 regular season. The Chicago Blackhawks will play in the Discover NHL® Central Division.

i am guessing there are not many of us left whose first hawks game featured white boards and a white skating surface.

i am not one of those “in my day” guys who hates life changes and progress and i don’t blame the nhl for finding every revenue stream available to them, especially under the current covid-19 conditions.

i do offer a suggestion……. an “old time hockey night” once a year. all games played with white boards. plain, white ice, and sweaters with only team logos, names, and numbers. no ads to be seen anywhere.

a remembrance of a kinder, gentler time when all of life wasn’t up for sale to the highest bidder.

Unfortunately commercialization brings in big bucks and rules. Naming a division is a non issue really when considering ways to recoop lost revenue. Hawks29 league likes to promote retro nights but a big part of that is the advertising revenue it creates, so doubt that idea works for them. Also I haven’t the slightest idea what that has to do with not wearing masks and helmets.

Ok with it. Once it gets back to normal maybe go back to the Norris division sponsored by Discover. Stickers on helmets ok if small like it is now. Nothing on jerseys thou.

Side note. Anyone else find it funny that the USA jr team is sponsored by a Mexican theme restaurant chain?

Hawk 3rd rounder Landon Slaggert looked decent for USA tonight.Physical, hard skating, and a nose for the puck.Very noticeable.

How did Slaggert compared to Barratt a yr ago. He plays the way Barratt plays then thats good for us. Two Barratts/Shaws in the making.

Timw liked how Slaggert looked too, a year or 2 away yet but has potential. Thought he looked best of Blackhawks prospects for what a short tournament is worth. Krutil looked good on some shifts and brutal on others, work to do but could be a high a reward type prospect. Teply wasn’t dominant or a very physical type player. He didn’t look fast but never seemed to have problem kerping up, made some nice setups, looks to have a decent shot and got back a few times to help out defense caught out of position. Found he wasn’t really noticeable good or bad alot of the time when out there. Again short tournament on a thrown together team, hard to know how much it means.

See Suter playing 2C between Kubalik and Shaw yesterday at camp scrimmages. Hope he can handle that, make him more valuable of signing.

The NHL and the owners are entitled to secure other revenue streams. It’s their league, it’s their teams. I don’t like it, but I also don’t really care. Its the way of the world these days, and I suppose with Covid 19 providing a body blow to the NHL they are even more focused on unlocking revenue opportunities. It’s a business. Don’t ever forget that. Been a fan since the mid-70’s, and lived through Dollar Bill Wirtz. I’ll give the ruddy faced old man credit for one thing…he was a wicked smart business man…Dollar Bill would have endorsed this move.

Watched the last 2 USA juniors games. Slaggert was physical and was used in key defensive situations. However his skating seemed strained. He could not accelerate quickly and seems to skate like Strom. Once he gets going there is some speed, issue is that it take he a while to get moving.

Also looks like Highmore Kampf Carpenter be 4th line to start. The other 2 spots could keep a Pirri from waivers and have a spot for probably Hagel 1st, Entwistle, Kurashev, Chalupa and Lankinen to have opportunities get into lineup, plus injuries will happen.

On defense Zadarov Boqvist and Dehaan Mitchell will be pairings to start, with Keith Murphy as top pair. Carlsson Kalynuk getting alot of time with 2 and 5 will be getting Nhl time at some point, injuries or if Boq or Mitch need time in Rfd. Seabrook when ready round out Nhl roster when ready. Seeler could be a taxi squad guy too. Unless in few days somebody really makes a huge case.

Finally the way I see it is that when Toews and Seabrook come back their will not be a lot off place for the youth program ,we have like 2-3 spot maximum for the kids …so guys like Beaudin ,Regula Chalupa ,Entwistle Kurashev ,will Never get a really good chance to play this year Except iff there is many casualties ( it can hapend)
Now about Toews ….. what I think is that he doesn’t have the same energy, mentally.i would not be surprise that he need to change Air and is non move clause …it’s just a feeling that he is not happy anymore with the Hawks …hopefully he can comeback and be part of the new waves in the next 2-3 years but I would not be surprise if he wants to continue with another organisation before the year ends. Just a feeling and hope I am wrong. Iff it’s is wish then just do it.
Now ,,,my wish is to see Hagel ,Kalynuk Kurashev and Mitchell play Many games and Beaudin at least 9 games …he will probably be trade to Montreal.

Jean,My hope is that your hunch on Toews being upset and sitting out because of a youth movement are completely wrong. If that were remotely true I would hope that the Hawks would not allow him to play another shift for them.

    @JR Roman

Feels light from our side. Not sure that Winnipeg calls us back with that offer. I don’t know how these things are valued, but it seems like we would need to pair 2 very high potential prospects, not just one with unclear upside and another with even less clear upside.

    But, start there.

  • January 7, 2021 at 4:51 pm
    Permalink

JR, I doubt there’s a chance WIN would even get close to that deal. You might be able to get Roslovic for an injury prone d-man, a couple “B” level prospects and a 4th round pick. Not sure what the problem is in Win with Laine but he’s a top line winger who won’t come cheap – certainly not the group in your proposal – IMO.

Start with that/close to it and go from there. Add to it so its fair and see if we like it.

Maybe add Barratt or/and Strome. We don’t have much but that #1 that should be very very high. Then I would not give up such a big package if we give the #1. We can always switch #1s so to still have a #1.

Hopefully the thought of trading the 2021 #1 pick never enters Stan’s brain. If he did trade the Hawks #1 pick next season – I would be forced to join the “tar and feather Stan” mob.

ER wouldn’t a signed Laine be as good as a #1. He is only 22. Then a signed Roslovic. Liked the quote that “prospects are suspects”. Those two would be closer to the perpetrator than a suspect. The clencher would be a swap of #1s. We would still get a pick and probably Win”s pick would be top 10 or 15. Win could end up 6th in that division.

I love the idea of trading for Laine, but the Hawks offer probably has to start with Dach plus a first-especially since I’m sure the entire NHL has figured out that the Hawks pick this year will be in the lottery. Laine has already scored 138 goals and he’s still 22. If you want a player with an elite skill set who’s proven it over multiple seasons, you have to give up elite potential. I wouldn’t do that trade from the Hawks pov as much as I love Laine. Dach plus the player the Hawks draft in the 1st this year have the potential to at least replicate, if not exceed Laine’s production. Plus, if the Hawks are fortunate enough to draft a defenseman in the top 5-6 this year, I’d rather have the potential for both a number 1 center and a top pair defenseman than a winger. Number 1 centers and top pair defensemen are rarely made available since they’re so valuable to a franchise.. while even great wingers get moved(i.e.-Taylor Hall, Panarin, and Kessel to name a few recent examples).

Those hoping for Laine haven’t been paying attention to his game. He is a defensive liability, his scoring has dropped and he wants a big contract. We already have a few of those high scoring, defensive liability types. No interest to me. This isn’t the year to trade for anyone except younger prospects. So is Barzal not getting signed? Looks like they need to clear some cap space. I do not think it would a terrible idea if Blackhawks can clear some of their space; hopefully as part of another gainful trade, help out the islanders or any other team in fixing their cap space as well and I would think the Blackhawks can come out ahead. If I were a betting individual I would wager Barzal has an elite season. Islanders should be fun to watch.

JR, I’m not in favor of acquiring Laine unless he somehow “falls in Stan’s lap” and that’s not going to happen. 1st round draft picks are off the table completely for at least the next 2-3 years and really any year unless a can’t pass up deal “falls in Stan’s lap” and we’ve already mentioned the probability of that happening. The Hawks should be in the hunt for the #1 overall pick in 2021 and 2022 and the players at the top of those drafts are what rebuilds are made out of.

Back to Laine … scoring winger is not the Hawks primary or secondary need in this rebuild. Top pairing D-man and top-6 center (to eventually replace Toews) are the main two “gets” for the Hawks – not top-6 winger. In addition to not being a positional need for the Hawks, he is in the last year of his second contract making $6.75M which means he will want more than that to re-sign next year – and while $6.75M isn’t too high for the numbers he puts up – something higher could limit salary cap flexibility which could derail the rebuild before it’s completed.

Now, if WPG would consider a DCat/Laine trade – then that might be worth it, but I’m pretty sure they would want more than just DCat and then it would be less worth it, depending what other pieces are involved.

Do both trades. Get the young player in separate trade. Then if Debrincat and Liane are both OFF FW and not good at D then its the same and if were not keeping Strome longterm anyways then its good for both teams. Were in the market for ‘hockey’ trades.

And anything that adds to our young wave/core.

Bring Laddy back for the 3rd time if its gains us good prospect. Right now were all about young wvae and protection with size.

That would be a fun 2nd checking line after the 4th checking line agasint other teams 1st lines and 2nd checking line of 16 19 65.

Mo, I do think they will be in the running for the #1 overall in 22 also. They may not end up with the worst record in either 21 or 22 but they will be bad enough to have more ping pong balls in the lottery than all but 2 or 3 teams.

I don’t think we’ll be good enough defensively for the next couple years to climb out of the cellar – in all phases: goalie, d-corps, and overall team defense. If we’re legitimately rebuilding the d-corps – it will take at least several seasons for the young d-men to hit their stride – and that’s if the guys we’re counting on become those guys – no guarantees.

I see the top 3 picks coming from 2 3 4 5 6 spot before ping pong balls. Most of time 1 spot doesnt get it and someone from 6-12 gets the 2nd or 3rd. So 2 3 4 5 6 spot is the place to be.

Not sure how many salaries the Blackhawks are allowed to bury in the minors or how much of a cap hit hickey will be playing in the minors. Of course I’m also inferring the Blackhawks move an exposed Seattle player in a separate deal. I’ve posted about this numerous times so I will not dive into too many details here but Murphy can fetch a kings ransom of return. He may very well be the best defender available on the trade market….

Honest Guy, looks like Hickey would need to play 40 games, which may be pro rated to 28 games or so this season on Nhl roster, needed to qualify to be used to make them compliant. He had no Nhl games last year and rules say 1 defenseman who either played 40 games previous season or 70 games previous 2 seasons.

Ian I forgot about that game count. I did know he has played mostly In the minors the past two years. Well, should he ens up here which is unlikely play his as an extra skater if its prorated, this is a business. My understanding is he is liked in Ny by fans anyway. With two years left maybe he would turn into a good asset mentoring the youth in Rockford next year. Guy could extend his career here if such isnt already in the works on the island.

Anyway hes one of the few examples of a player with a very low cap hit a team is actually trying to move. I look around the league and there are quite a few bad or at least not good contracts. Seattle should being some relief to all teams salary cap situation. While I think the Blackhawks are in good shape for the Seattle draft…..as I look at every mock draft it would seem the best,or one of the best anyway, players on Seattle will be from the Blackhawks….so while I stand by my word the Blackhawks are in good shape…they are, but put as asterisk on that statement because its not without making a roster move or two and managing roster exposure. Beating a dead horse Murphy is the obvious, easiest, and probably most valuable move. Easily a couple picks for Murphy including a first rounder. Probably the most valuable defenseman available to trade in the entire league, especially factoring in cap hit and the fact he is signed another year at a reasonable cap expenditure. Only downside might be the Seattle draft, which…I mean if a team is chasing the cup is it worth losing a season, and really more so just to avoid losing a single player, obviously not. On the flip side of the coin the Blackhawks should do anything they can to come out of this season and next in particular the Seattle draft shining. Takes some shrewdness but very very possible.

Regarding roster exposure I’m looking specifically at Hagel and Carlsson. Do you not play them for x games to avoid exposure? Just some food for thought do not really have an opinion one way or other.

Anyway I’ll throw another name out there as a low cap hit, er lower anyway, that a team is looking to move. John Moore of the Boston Bruins. John was born in Illinois if that matters. See there are lots of players out there that could snug their way in the Blackhawks salary cap given just one move elsewise. John would also meet the exposure requirements easily….well…playing as the 7th defenseman anywya.l…whatever put him on depth wing…
