The Hypocrisy Of The Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks want the NHL to throw the book at Duncan Keith for his hit on Daniel Sedin on Wednesday night.

Ironic, isn’t it, that an organization that has taken more cheap/dirty hits than any in the league in the last three years suddenly wants the league’s police to come to their defense?

For the sake of reminding the hypocrits like Alain Vigneault about the Canucks history, let’s take a look back at some of the hits their coach described as “hockey plays.”

Remind me: how many games was Raffi Torres suspended for this hit on Brent Seabrook?

I’m sure Nathan Horton’s opinion of the Canucks “clean” play isn’t shared by many in a Vancouver sweater.

Did I mention the Canucks have been known to use their teeth as much as their elbows?

Alex Burrows bites… and also pulls hair!

The culture in Vancouver is one that encourages cheap shots, late hits and dirty play. Indeed, despite trying as hard as they could to bully their way to a championship last year, the Bruins pushed them around the rink and knocked them out. That’s why the Canucks traded Cody Hogdson for Zack Kassian at the deadline; they wanted to be more physical.

It’s nothing new that a game between Chicago and Vancouver got physical in a hurry, but this time the injury happened to a Canucks player.

As my grandmother always said, you reap what you sow. And having the best player on the Canucks roster suffer a concussion with only a couple weeks left in the season is nothing more than karma coming full circle.

Martin go rub Sedin’s pussy for awhile why dont you? Vancouver is the epitome of classless fans. Your team wants to play hockey like a bunch of 12 year olds then prepare to pay a price of your douche baggery. Your team has a history of being cheap, diving, biting and hair pulling. No wonder every NHL team hates you guys.

Not to mention who the fuck flies a concussed player to Vancouver for medical treatment. Isn’t air travel bad for someone who might have suffered a concussion? Bet hes just fine and its an act to get the league to do something more about keiths elbow more than anything.

Its ok Im sure your getting your matches and gasoline ready at this point.

LOL @ Martin… but I’ll make my response simple because clearly you have issues.

True/False: Alex Burrows, who bites and pulls hair, is still on the Canucks roster? didn’t I see him get hit w/ 14 PIM last night?
True/False: Aaron Rome, who knocked Horton out, is still on the Canucks roster?

Yes, I need to get my facts straight…

    Bamford,

Yes Alex Burrows is still on the roster. He was hit with an equal 14 mins as was Keith. Duncan Keith was equally guilty. If the referees called the game right by giving Ducan Keith five minutes and a game for the elbow to Daniel Sedin. None of that crap would have happened. Rome wasn’t in the lineup last night, so your point is moot.

You’re right Martin, karma did come full circle…Daniel Sedin hit Duncan Keith with a cheap shot, which he got away with and Keith, being a tough guy, continued to play. Keith retaliated and gave Sedin a taste of his own medicine. Sedin…not being a tough guy, but a total douche bag, left the game. Do I agree with Keith’s cheap shot? No. Do I understand it? Yes. Yes, Martin, you’re absolutely right. That’s why Burrows has pulled Keith’s hair, bit Bergeron, and kneed Keith in the balls last night right? All hockey plays? Your head is so far up Ryan Kesler’s ass that you will be able to give him prostate exams when he turns 40.

I think a far more important question to ask, aside from questions regarding Martin’s inability to use reason and provide logical arguments, is whether or not Henrik’s groin got injured when Keith elbowed his Daniel.

This is ridiculous…you don’t even have to reply to that idiot from Vancouver Tab…he is as blind and hypercritical as the Canucks organization…

Even if we took this incident as a one-off, think about what actually happened last night…Duncan Keith, someone respected league wide for his outstanding, clean play, hits one of the Sedin’s in the head with an elbow…

Gee, lets examine why…is it perhaps that for 3 years the Canucks have targeted Keith with dirty, high, late hits designed to take him off of his game??? Is it because a few minutes earlier, the same Sedin ran at Keith, who was unprotected and vulnerable against the glass in the corner after making a play, and viscously brought up his elbow and shoulder into Keith’s unprotected head???

Do any of these things count for anything or what??? This is SUCH BULLSH$T…the Canuckleheads are the CHEAPEST team in the league…that is why they are unilaterally despised around the league…the Hawks tend to be a soft team that plays the game and doesn’t hit as often as they should…Duncan Keith is perhaps the most gentlemanly player in the league, and yet who are the goons???

When Shanahan looks at this he will see Keith (a zero count offender), retaliating to a brutal hit by the same player against him, where NO PENALTY WAS CALLED…Shanahan will likely do something about this hit, to continue the effective message he is sending, but he will also take a hard look into the Sedin cheap shot as well…

And for Vigneault and the Vancouver players to make such a fuss about this bullsh$t situation, screams poor sports, childishness, and not handling losing very well. Which is what they did…THEY LOST, because they were outplayed by a team that is without their heart and soul, and coming off a game the night before…

So Vancouver, STFU, and start realizing that throwing rocks in a glass house is probably not the smartest thing to do…

Hi I’m Martin and I’m a little whiny Canucks fan. I have a well manicured beard that I dye red. I call myself Martin Sedin as I stare in the mirror every morning for my daily affirmation. My heroes on the team gave me the example and now I’m really good at crying and complaining. I’m so good at it that I bitch & moan every day at my parents, with whom I still live. In my free time, when I’m not doing yard work for my allowance, I love to seek out blogs that cover the Canucks’ rivals and whine about things other teams do that rub my favorite players the wrong way.

If you don’t count online stuff, I’m still a virgin. But that’s ok, when the Canucks lose in the playoffs again, we’ll have another riot and I’ll probably trick a woman in to making out with me in the middle of a street. Maybe she’ll take me back to her trailer and I’ll get lucky.

I think this finger-pointing pissing contest among fan bases is ridiculous, pointless, and poorly thought out.

“Oh, the dude on your team did something stupid and hurt a player, so all people who root for your team are classless/trashy/stupid/ugly/whatever.” And then we resort to finding statistics or, worse, anecdotal evidence to back up the fallacious “logic” of our assertions. That I root for the Blackhawks has no bearing on whether I condone the hit that Sedin received last night; further, that the Blackhawks players I root for may or may not have engaged in other dangerous plays in the past has little bearing on my class or intelligence as a fan. Grudgingly, I think this has to be admitted for Canucks fans too.

The problem arises when we go out of our way to cheer for players to hurt others. It’s a tempting thing to look for; in such a highly competitive enterprise, removing a valuable piece from an opponent’s arsenal can be just as effective as adding an equal valuable piece to one’s own. By encouraging or justifying Burrows or Keith in their dangerous play, we exacerbate the problem.

Further, it needs to be addressed that some players *do* have a record of more dangerous, or more frequent, plays than other players. This is where statistics (but NOT! anecdotes of that one game where that one dude did this one thing) can provide valuable insight to the layout (pun intended) of the land. The League admittedly has a consistency problem in addressing these trends among players, but ad hominem attacks on other fan bases get us nowhere.

    Summarily, grow up.

    Go ‘Hawks.

Because of Vancouver, The NHL has taken up a WWF like atmosphere. They are effectively playing the heels of the sport, and doing it well I might add. Vancouver’s past three seasons has reminded me of the Iron Sheik. Hes foreign, everyone knows he doesn’t have a chance of winning the title, he’d pull a cheap shot and be the first to whine when reprimanded, and he always got trumped by the good guy(s) (Blackhawks and Boston). I watched game seven last year at a local hockey friendly establishment. Everyone there was obviously pulling for the Bruins, but I found one couple wearing Toronto jerseys. I asked them who they were cheering for. They responded very adamantly with Boston. They have been life long Leafs fans and admitted to disliking Boston, but they couldn’t imagine a team like Vancouver’s “disgracing” the cup.

Duncs has never been known as a dirty player but I agree something will come down on him, hopefully, not too severe; let’s hope that Shanny also takes a good solid peek at the high hit he took earlier along the glass and factors that into finding some fault elsewhere too, eh? (had to get that in there for our Canadian readers who are feeling sorry for themselves)

Die-hard, long-time Hawks fan here (Tinley Park) who has been to Vancouver twice over the years; the last time was 1/25/10 several weeks b4 the Olympics…Hawks lost that night 5-1 (it was the night Ladd broke Kesler’s nose). I will state for the record that the Canucks fans that sat next to me and near me were great during the game; met some good people and had much fun. On the flip side, many assholes were encountered on the way out of the building post-game who wanted to verbally smack me for the spanking the Hawks got in the game; of course when I reminded them about how the Hawks removed them from the 09 playoffs they quieted down pretty quickly. To be fair, there’s likely some of the same balance with Hawks fans treatment of Canucks fans here.

But, I absolutely agree that recent history supports much dirtier play and hits from numerous Canuck players; I won’t cite the incidents again here as it’s been pointed out above.

There’s no comparison and for Vigneault to be crying is laughable! Question to Hawks fans; can anyone recall Q crying and bitching about Johnny get roughed up which has resulted in him being sidelined? Not hardly! I can’t recall one word from him or the organization either.

So I agree with the premise of Tab’s blog…there is blatant hypocrisy emanating from Vancouver on this one; they clearly see things only one way and it’s absolutely, totally a joke.

    GO HAWKS!

Shanahan will take a look at Sedin’s high hit on Keith. Sedin definitely came in high and maybe a bit late, but I don’t think he led with the elbow or targeted the head, although he did catch a bit of Keith’s head.

The significance of Shanahan looking at the Sedin hit on Keith is that it shows Keith was retaliating on Sedin and that there was clear intent to go for the head by Keith. Keith’s hit had nothing to do with the play of the game at that time, making it dirty, retaliatory, intentional and calculated. He’s going to catch a nice suspension from Shanahan. And if Sedin is out for any length of time, Keith better keep his head up in the next game the Hawks play against the Nucks.

The bottom line is that it was a stupid play by Keith.

P.S. I’ve seen people posting on the internet that Sedin had it coming and that Keith’s hit was justified. These people know nothing about hockey.

I as well as many other Canadians depise the the Canucks as the real Canucks play for Chicago (mostly hard working Canadian players) not a bunch of Russians (thankfully not one of those punks). I guess martin forgot about the BS hit that Kesler just pulled the other night. The same type hit Marchand got suspended for but Kesler nothing. Kesler is the biggest whiner. Burrows (burroughs) is a donkey and acts like of course an ASS and Lapierre needs to have that shit eaters grin smacked to get the yellow off his teeth and the taste out of his mouth.

It looks to me like Sedin went for Keiths head on that shot and Keith was looking the other way at the time. To me that was a viscous blow to the head that is being minimized solely because Keith didn’t get hurt and because Sedin is not a goon. I think Sedin should get a suspension for that hit. Unfortunately Keith retaliated in an open and obvious way so he is likely to get suspended for a game or two. Overall, Vancouver pushes this style of play so their complaints are very hollow.

  • March 22, 2012 at 9:01 pm

Hey Klown. You’re entire comment, which you probably had to spend 30 minutes editing, was completely falsified in the second sentence. Fact: Sedin (the ugly twin) DID come in late, he DID come in HIGH, and he DID target the head and he DID make solid contact with Keith’s head – so much so that his head bounced off of the glass after the hit.

Your argument is stupid. If Sedin doesn’t head hunt in the first place, he doesn’t get clobbered, and who knows, he might have been able to help his team win the game. Sedin (the ugly twin) had it coming, and he should get the same suspension as DK gets. Period.

I have a challenge for you, Klown. Try to find a tape of a fight starring your coach Vigneault that DOESN’T involve him jumping on someone’s back. Your team needs a different head coach. Then they need to grow a collective pair of balls.

What bother’s me is the fans root for a player that is a man, and real men don’t pull hair when they are in a fight, they punch the other guy. And hockey players playing the toughest sport around take that up a notch. But not burrow’s, he makes the NHL look like a bunch of sissys by the way he fights, and he also bit a player. Little kids bite, come on. The Cansucks are a disgrace to Canada and to the game of Hockey. I just wish that the NHL would start to suspend the Cansuck players. But look, after they lost the Cup what did their fans do, they destroyed their city. Looted, burned cars, and caused so much damage for what, cause they are a bunch of losers. I have 3 players in the NHL that I cannot stand. I am sure everyone has more, but, I have 3. Willie Mitchell ‘ex canuck, Todd Bertuzzi ‘ ex canuck, Kevin Bieska’ current canuck. Can’t stand any of them. Don’t care if they are nice guys off the ice, the way they play is dirty.

“by YOUR definition, Mr. Klown (appropriate?), you either know nothing about hockey or you’re a d-bag. Just using your words buddy.”

Um, Tabby? You’ve made no point whatsoever with this statement. If you’re going to post a thought, then try to make it a complete thought. It’s not that hard.

I think the point you tried, but failed, to make is that I implied that Vancouver would reply with a purposely dirty hit on Keith. Again, I’m assuming this because you failed to make a point with your post with your lack of reading comprehension and bad English. If this is what you implied, then please learn to read, as I never said this.

What I meant is that Keith should keep his head up against Vancouver going forward. If you knew anything about hockey, which you clearly don’t, you’d know what that means. Vancouver knows any future matchup will be watched closely and anything borderline will be called and analyzed by the league, so I doubt they’d go after Keith and do something like he did against Sedin, especially in the playoffs.

Come on, guy. I’d think you know something about hockey since this is your blog. You’re embarrassing yourself. But hey, thanks for playing!

Yes, Klown, the Canucks have never done anything stupid in the postseason. I think you confused WINNING with taking dumb penalties.

And my reading comprehension is just fine. You’re the idiot that left a half-ass comment that implied a cheap-shot team would take a shot at someone. I appreciate you coming back in an attempt to make yourself look less stupid, but would encourage you to say what you actually mean BEFORE you called out for being an idiot.

So you’re telling me, people are biased for their teams?

Does anybody have a clear, ice-level video of the hit? I’ve seen two full-rink videos (one is CSN, I think the other is TSN). Due to slightly different angles/clarity, yes, it’s obvious Keith hits Daniel’s head and where the puck is (flying through the air), but I would LOVE to see an ice-level video of the hit (for further clarity, not to revel in the hit), if one exists.

It’s been amusing to watch the Canucks fans react over the past 24 hrs. “Throw the book at him!” “10+ games!” “Suspend him through the playoffs!” Oh, and my personal favorite, Kevin “I only pick on jump players smaller than me” Bieska claiming how very, very dirty a player that Keith is. (Seriously, Bieska, you sound like an idiot. Shut up.) The same Keith that every single broadcaster and pro writer stated is a very clean player.

Hmmm. You know… if the two teams were reversed, the most anybody on the Blackhawks would’ve said would’ve been Q saying, “I think the call on the ice should’ve been different, I didn’t agree with it; now it’s up to the league (Shanahan) to decide.” And that would’ve been the end of it, til the hearing.

That’s the difference between these two teams. The Canucks players and their coach have built a reputation for crying, whining, diving; should they be surprised that people think they’re crying wolf now? Even Henrik himself said earlier this season that the reputation had become unacceptable and that the team had the talent and skill that they shouldn’t be diving or anything like it. They really shouldn’t; they DO have the skills and talent to play amazing, entertaining hockey. So do it, Vancouver. Other fans and teams will have far more respect for you winning and playing fairly than your current tactics.

I’m not saying Keith was innocent in the move. I do believe he didn’t intend to actually injure Daniel; after all, he’s seen his partner, Seabrook, intentionally knocked out twice (Wisniewski and Torres). Toews is still out with a concussion. (No doubt if he’d actually been on the ice last night, the Canucks players would’ve gone after him with a vengeance in an attempt of retribution. As it was, we witnessed attempt after attempt to run Blackhawks players; Burrows trying to knee Keith; attempts to run over Crawford, players attempting to fight, etc.)

But then again, maybe he snapped for a moment. Maybe he was sick and f***ing tired of having other teams think they can take ongoing liberties with the Blackhawks and never get penalized for it. And Daniel Sedin just happened to be standing in front of him at that moment.

If it gets the refs and linesmen to start watching matchups between the Hawks and Canucks more closely and call more stringently, then a suspension is worth it. As it is, the Canucks have repeatedly gotten away with plenty of ugly plays both on Chicago and Vancouver ice. They’re not innocent, no matter how hard their fans try to argue that they are. They’re often sneaky, yes, but not innocent.

If the Canucks wanted to gain the respect of other teams across the league – they seem bewildered and surprised and butt-hurt that other teams and fans don’t like them, after all, despite their protests that they “don’t care” – then they would start behaving like other teams do, and stop trying to make big post-game “we’re so wounded” appeals to the media for every little play. I used to actually really enjoy watching the Canucks play, but every time one of them gets away with sneaky crap (vs Hawks or any other team) or is busy crying to the media, the respect that once was there and the enjoyment has slowly eroded away. There’s still a few players I enjoy watching (Schneider, Mason, Malhotra) and I don’t want to dislike them, too.

Personally, I think the refs should have let Shaw go at it with Bieska. Bieska would’ve been mighty surprised to find out just how much fight that Shawzer’s got in him – and #65 wouldn’t have given a damn that Bieska’s got a 2 inches and 10 pounds on him.

All Canucks fans on this page have missed the entire point of the post. No where in this post does Tab condone Keith’s hit but rather is showing how ridiculous Canucks and their fans are responding. A majority of the current Canucks have built the rivalry that now stands between between the Canucks and the Hawks. Obviously their games will always be heated, but clearly the Canucks were the aggressors that night. For them to act like the Hawks are the only trash talkers on or off the ice is laughable. I don’t hate the Canucks by any means and honestly have seen enough videos of players off-ice that actually make me kind of like them, but they are certainly not victims.

For even the most level-headed, long-fused person there is a breaking point.

It’s unfortunate Daniel has a concussion, but based off Keith’s track record and character alone, it’s hard to believe his intent was to take Daniel out. Should Keith be suspended? Yes. The question is for how long. If Shanahan decides to make an ‘example’ of Keith by suspending him more than 5 games, it will be disappointing and sad, as that method hardly works to diminish behavior. Players who are repeat offenders with no punishments will continue to be repeat offenders.

The Blackhawks were the more focused and disciplined team that night. Outside of Keith’s hit, they were pushed around nearly every whistle, and the Canucks had something like 14 more penalty minutes, too. You can say that matters or not. The Hawks stayed poised throughout the game and in OT and came out with the win. Regardless of who won, both teams should probably take a look at their own play and remember that you have to pick your battles.

Again, if you are a Canuck fan, read the post carefully and don’t miss the point.

This comment is somewhat unrelated. I can’t add to the comments previously posted. However, I do have this to say: I am also a Chicago Wolves (AHL) fan, but as soon as they changed their affiliation to the Vancouver Canucks, I stopped supporting the Wolves and will continue to do so until the end their affiliation with the Vancouver Canucks.

Does anyone out there think Sedin should be shelved for his head shot to DK well after the puck left DK’s position in the corner? I certainly think so, but I am biased.

Give your head a shake, dirty hit by a great player. Five games is reasonable. Play hockey, hope they meet in round 2 or 3.

@Martin – your first comment makes no sense. The hit did not knock the canucks out of the playoffs permanently! If i were a Vancouver fan i would be livid at the thought of losing a player for an unknown sum of time over a dirty hit. Wait, that already happened to us. Though the finger can not be pointed at a specific hit Thornton gave Toews a couple blows to the head near the benches on that dreadful 9-game skid. I digress. It is a result of the atmosphere of this match up that lead to this. Raffi hit on Seabrook, Burrows pulling hair, runs at star players from both teams… it’s a mess. The book was thrown at Keith IMO. There should have been repercussions for the Canucks too.

    PS
Classless fans burn down their own city after a great run at the Cup falls short. Opinionated and observant fans post blogs like this.

    Adam out!

3 games would have been more in line with the infraction, and circumstances, But
nobody ever said the NHL was fair in doling out punishment. This is just another example of such.

First of all, why was Keith the only one to get suspended from that game?????

Why wasn’t Burrows suspended for kneeing Keith in the crotch?

Why wasn’t Danielle Sedin suspended for head hunting Keith earlier?

Can someone PLEASE explain the rational behind all of this??
