Update: Wyatt Kalynuk To Miss 2-4 Weeks
The Blackhawks may have lost a defenseman for the start of the regular season.
Reese Johnson pushed Wyatt Kalynuk into the boards during Tuesday’s practice and he limped off the ice. He did return, but after practice head coach Jeremy Colliton indicated Kalynuk would miss “weeks” because of the injury.
On Wednesday, the Hawks announced he’ll miss 2-4 weeks.

Thankfully, the Blackhawks are loaded with defenseman to start the season. Jakub Galvas was on the ice with a group of mostly NHL regulars on Tuesday; this injury may open the door for him to make the Opening Night roster. Chicago appears ready to start the year with both Ian Mitchell and Nicolas Beaudin in Rockford.
The Hawks’ top six defenseman appear to be Seth and Caleb Jones, Jake McCabe, Connor Murphy, Calvin de Haan and Riley Stillman. At practice on Tuesday, Stillman was paired with Seth Jones with McCabe joining Murphy.
Too bad for Wyatt but an opportunity for Galvas who I admit to not knowing very much about and he’s still only 22
Assuming he’s the 7th D to start the year does that mean C Jones is the D on PP2?
He’s played well
Great opportunity in last week for one of the youngsters to get some time with Blackhawks.
Wrap wonder if they go with 2 D on 2nd pp in that case.
This Is Hockey ! You get a high ankle sprain or separate a shoulder and they take weeks to heal ! I sort of chuckled when the article said that the club is loaded with D Men ! AHL caliber hockey players ! We’ll see in the first month how the club progresses ! 2 and 4 and 7 are gone ! Will the real D Men please stand up ! Pops 4
Hawks Dmen =1 Murf ,2 Mc Cab ,3 DeHann , 4 S Jones , 5 Stillman , 6 C Jones 7 Beaudin .
Kalynuk will probably miss 4-6 weeks depending on ? . ?
Could be a nice opportunity for Regula or Phillips. Galvan is small at 161 pds .
I can live with the pairings described by Tab above. Can’t say Galvas was impressive to me last night, but having him around for a 7th Dman is better than wasting Beaudin or Mitchell on the bench in Chicago, at least for me. I feel Caleb Jones and Stillman both have earned their way into the lineup for now. Would be nice to see them both excel. De Haan as 3rd pair may serve him better too.
Silent – exactly right regarding Beaudin or Mitchell
Galvas has already been playing pro in Europe and although he has lots to still learn it probably will be less detrimental to him to be merely practicing with the Hawks and watching games from the press box – the other two have less pro experience and he will get the odd game in CHI I’m sure
Bummer. I thought Kalynuk had a chance to be in the starting lineup this season and had hopes he would be in the top-4 by the end of the season. It could still happen but this makes it less likely.
That said, I like what I’ve seen from Caleb and would probably give him the nod over Kalynuk to this point in the preseason anyway and with deHaan still in the picture I’m not sure Kalynuk would have been in the starting lineup.
Still a bummer.
If anybody watched the Florida-Tampa Bay match last night they would have seen how far behind our club is to becoming a true playoff team.
Everyone knows they’re not as good as TB or FLA – maybe one day they will be maybe not
Galvas- has been steady and quiet so far which sometimes is a very good thing… when u r a 5th/6th d man. Much prefer that… than getting poster-ized on mistakes/miscues. Like big Seth has been a few times in pre season.
Let’s see what kid brings… when the REAL games/ speed come.
In very small sample. Galvas seems to be a D version of TT… always seems to know where to push puck to… and know his options before the forecheck is on him… of course the speed and intensity will b much tougher when real season begins.
Entwistle is lined up with Toews and Kub today – JC obviously likes him and maybe there’s a legit chance he makes the roster – it would have to be as a starter because there’s no point having him as the 13th FW
I didn’t think Entwistle would bump Khaira from the line up but maybe (if he can show that he can be a reliable PKer) he can take Carp’s spot and Carpenter becomes the 13th forward
If this happens then one of Nylander or Strome needs a new home but already the beat writers are talking as though Nylander is going to be put on waivers so maybe the Hawks are willing to risk losing Nylander to keep Entwistle up
Obviously a Nylander or Strome trade would be preferable to waivers so we’ll see what happens
Wrap agree Nylander looks like he will be put on waivers but with Kalynuk going on ir they save $500,000 of his caphit. Prorated cause only played a partial season last year. That would allow them to retain half of Stromes salary and get under 81.5m cap ceiling for opening day to put Shaw on Ltir.
Wrap, Meant to add Nylander waived allows a spot for Entwistle, haven’t seen Khaira yet but curious why you think he isn’t a candidate to be 13th fwd.
Wrap: There’s no comparison, we just don’t come close to that level of play against them or any other team that can play physical. This team is still soft and will get pushed around out there. But why take it from me?? You’ll have to stay tuned for that.
C Jones out with wrist injury.
Beaudin will probably start with the big team .
Ian – I’m just thinking that they didn’t sign Khaira to be in the press box and he’s been good in his role at camp – Carpenter is on the last year of his deal so he’s possibly more likely to be the 13 th FW if they keep Entwistle up which I’ll still be surprised if they do
Hawks2010 – I saw C Jones missed practice with a sore wrist but I haven’t heard he’s out for any length of time- have you?
Ian ..
2-4 weeks before coming back ,let see iff they give him time to get at 100% before coming back .
Kalynuk is out 2-4 weeks not C Jones as far as I know
Wrap Carpenters is one of top 2 pk guys and his play without the puck is probably needed in the lineup in my opinion.
Ian – I don’t disagree which again leads me to think that Entwistle starts in RKF – I don’t see how they squeeze him on the roster as an everyday player but maybe I’m wrong
I think it would be exciting if he made the team out of camp but I think he’ll have to wait until later in the season for a call up
If Khaira and Carp are both starters I suppose Entwistle could outplay Borgstrom for a top 9 role – again I’ll be surprised but it could happen and then Borg would be the 13th FW
Sens Tkachuk holding out and Colin White out for4-6 months, could be a opportunity for Nylander or Strome there as both rfas next summer.
